In the deep blue sea, the dolphins and the whales had a big fight. Nobody remembered why. They just fought and fought.
深く青い海で、イルカたちとクジラたちが大げんかをしていました。なぜけんかになったのか、だれも覚えていませんでした。ただ、ひたすら戦い続けていたのです。
The whales were huge. They hit the water with their giant tails. Boom! Boom! The dolphins were fast. They swam around and around the whales. Splash! Splash! The whole sea shook, and big waves rolled everywhere.
クジラたちはとても大きく、巨大な尾びれで水をたたきました。ドーン！ ドーン！ イルカたちはすばしこく、クジラたちのまわりをぐるぐる泳ぎまわりました。バシャッ！ バシャッ！ 海全体がゆれ、あちこちで大きな波がうねりました。
A tiny fish lived near the top of the water. He was a little sprat, not much bigger than a finger. The waves pushed him up and down. "This fight is too much," he said. "Somebody must stop it."
水面の近くに、ちっちゃな魚が住んでいました。スプラットという種類の小魚で、指くらいの大きさしかありませんでした。小魚は波にもまれて、上へ下へとゆられました。「このけんかはひどすぎる」と、小魚は言いました。「だれかが止めなくちゃ」
So he swam up and put his little head out of the water. "Stop! Stop!" he shouted in his tiny voice. "Dolphins! Whales! Listen to me! I can be your judge. Tell me your problems, and I can help you make peace!"
そこで小魚は上へ泳いでいって、小さな頭を水の上に出しました。「やめて！ やめて！」と、小魚はちっちゃな声で叫びました。「イルカさんたち！ クジラさんたち！ 聞いてください！ ぼくが仲裁役になってあげます。もめごとを話してください。仲直りのお手伝いをしますよ！」
The dolphins and the whales stopped. They all looked at the tiny fish. It was very quiet.
イルカたちとクジラたちは動きを止めました。みんなが、そのちっちゃな魚を見ました。あたりはしんと静まりかえりました。
Then one big dolphin laughed. "You? Our judge?" he said. "You are just a little sprat! We don't want help from a little thing like you. We can fight all day and all night. That is better than help from you!"
すると、一頭の大きなイルカが笑いました。「おまえが？ おれたちの仲裁役だと？」と、イルカは言いました。「おまえはただのちっぽけなスプラットじゃないか！ おまえみたいなちびの助けなんかいらないよ。おれたちは昼も夜も戦い続けてやる。そのほうが、おまえに助けてもらうよりましだ！」
Then the fight started again. Boom! Splash! And the poor little sprat swam away very fast.
そして、またけんかがはじまりました。ドーン！ バシャッ！ かわいそうな小さなスプラットは、大急ぎで泳いで逃げていきました。
