A goat climbed up a high, rocky cliff. At the top, there was a little green grass, and she ate it happily.
ヤギが、高い岩だらけのがけをよじ登りました。てっぺんには緑の草が少し生えていて、ヤギはそれをおいしそうに食べました。
A wolf came by. He looked up and saw the goat. "What a nice fat goat," he said. "But the cliff is too high. I can't climb up there." So he thought of a trick.
そこへ、オオカミが通りかかりました。上を見ると、ヤギがいます。「よく太ったいいヤギだ」と、オオカミは言いました。「でも、がけが高すぎる。あそこまでは登れないな」そこで、オオカミは一つ、悪だくみを思いつきました。
"Hello, dear goat!" he called up in a sweet voice. "Please be careful! It is very dangerous up there. You can fall and get hurt! Come down here with me."
「やあ、ヤギさん！」と、オオカミは上に向かって、甘い声で呼びかけました。「どうか気をつけて！ そこはとても危ないですよ。落ちてけがをするかもしれません！ わたしのいるこっちへ下りておいでなさい」
The goat looked down at him. She said nothing.
ヤギはオオカミを見下ろしましたが、何も言いませんでした。
"And look at this grass down here!" said the wolf. "It is so green and soft and sweet. Much better than that dry grass up there. Come down and eat with me. I want to see you happy."
「それに、この下の草を見てごらんなさい！」と、オオカミは言いました。「青々として、柔らかくて、甘いですよ。そこのかさかさの草より、ずっといい。下りてきて、わたしと一緒に食べましょう。あなたの幸せそうな顔が見たいんですよ」
The goat laughed. "Oh, Mr. Wolf," she said. "You are so kind. But I know you. You don't care about my lunch. You want me for your lunch! I am not coming down."
ヤギは笑いました。「まあ、オオカミさん」と、ヤギは言いました。「なんてご親切なんでしょう。でも、あなたの考えはお見通しよ。あなたは、わたしのお昼ごはんのことなんか気にしていない。わたしをあなたのお昼ごはんにしたいのよ！ 下りていきませんからね」
Then she took another bite of her grass and turned her back on him. The hungry wolf walked away with nothing.
そう言うと、ヤギは草をもうひと口食べて、オオカミに背中を向けました。おなかをすかせたオオカミは、何も手に入れられずに去っていきました。
