A young fox lived in the forest. He knew many animals, but he did not know lions. One day, he walked around a big tree, and there it was. A huge lion!
森に、若いキツネが住んでいました。キツネはたくさんの動物を知っていましたが、ライオンには会ったことがありませんでした。ある日、大きな木を回りこむと、そこにいたのです。とても大きなライオンが！
The lion had a big golden mane, huge paws, and a very loud voice. "Roarrr!" The fox's legs shook. His heart beat like a drum. He almost fainted. Then he turned and ran home as fast as he could. He hid in his den all day.
ライオンには大きな金色のたてがみと、巨大な前足がありました。声もとても大きいのです。「ガオーッ！」キツネの足は震え、心臓は太鼓のようにどきどき鳴りました。もう少しで気を失うところでした。キツネはくるりと向きを変えると、全速力で家へ逃げ帰りました。そして一日中、巣穴に隠れていました。
A few days later, the fox met the lion again. The fox was still afraid, but this time he did not run away. He hid behind a bush and watched. "He is very big," he thought, "but he is just walking. He is not angry."
数日後、キツネはまたライオンに出会いました。まだ怖かったのですが、今度は逃げませんでした。やぶのかげに隠れて、様子を見ていたのです。「とても大きいな」と、キツネは思いました。「でも、ただ歩いているだけだ。怒ってはいない」
After a few more days, the fox saw the lion a third time. The lion was lying in the sun by the river. He looked sleepy and calm.
さらに数日たって、キツネは三度目にライオンを見かけました。ライオンは川のそばで、日なたにねそべっていました。眠そうで、穏やかな顔をしていました。
This time, the fox felt brave. He walked right up to the lion. "Good morning, Mr. Lion!" he said with a smile. "Nice weather today, isn't it? How is your family?"
今度は、キツネは勇気がわいてきました。キツネはライオンのすぐそばまで歩いていきました。「おはようございます、ライオンさん！」と、キツネはにこにこして言いました。「今日はいいお天気ですね。ご家族はお元気ですか？」
The lion opened one eye and looked at the little fox. "Good morning," he said. "Yes, it is very nice weather. My family is fine, thank you."
ライオンは片目を開けて、小さなキツネを見ました。「おはよう」と、ライオンは言いました。「ああ、とてもいい天気だね。家族はみんな元気だよ、ありがとう」
And so the two of them sat in the sun and talked like old friends.
こうして二匹は日なたに座って、古くからの友だちのようにおしゃべりをしました。
