Many mice lived in an old house. They had a big problem. A cat lived in the house too. She was quiet and quick, and she caught a mouse almost every day.
One night, all the mice had a big meeting in a dark corner. "We must do something," said the oldest mouse. "That cat is too dangerous. What can we do?"
Many mice had ideas. "Let's run away!" said one. "We can live in the barn," said another. But nobody liked these ideas very much.
Then a young mouse stood up. "I have a great idea," he said. "The cat is very quiet. That is the problem. We can't hear her. So let's put a bell on her neck! Then we can hear her. Ring, ring! And we can run into our holes in time."
All the mice clapped and cheered. "What a wonderful idea!" they said. "A bell! Yes, a bell!" They danced and sang. They were very happy.
Then the old mouse spoke again. "Yes, it is a good idea," he said slowly. "But tell me. Who can put the bell on the cat?"
The room was suddenly quiet. One mouse looked at the floor. Another mouse looked at the wall. "Not me," said one. "Not me," said another. "I am too small," said a third. Nobody wanted the job.
So the mice had a wonderful idea, but they never used it. And the next day, the cat caught a mouse again.
