Long ago, the animals could talk. In a big forest lived a bear. He was very big and very strong.
"I am the biggest animal in the forest," said the bear. "I am the strongest, too. I can do anything!"
"Can you move that big rock?" asked a rabbit.
The bear moved the big rock.
"Can you pull down that tree?" asked a deer.
The bear pulled down the tree.
Then a little brown squirrel came out of a hole. "Bear," he said, "can you stop the sun?"
"What?" said the bear.
"Every morning, the sun comes up," said the squirrel. "Can you stop it?"
"Of course I can," said the bear. "Tomorrow morning, the sun will not come up. I will tell it to stop."
That night, the bear sat on the top of a hill. He looked at the east. "Sun, do not come up tomorrow!" he said.
The little squirrel sat near him. He looked at the east, too. "Oh, the sun will come up," he sang quietly. "The sun will come up."
All night, the bear and the squirrel watched. Then the sky in the east turned a little pink. Then it turned orange. And then the sun came up, big and bright.
The squirrel laughed and laughed. He danced on a rock. "The sun came up! The sun came up! The bear cannot stop the sun!"
The bear was very angry with the little squirrel.
The bear put out his big paw and caught him. "You laughed at me," he said. "Now I will eat you!"
The squirrel thought fast. "Bear," he said, "you are so big and strong. I am sorry I laughed. But I can't breathe! Please lift your paw a little, so I can say sorry the right way."
The bear lifted his paw a little. Zip! The squirrel ran away very fast. But the bear's long claws scratched his back as he ran.
The squirrel ran into his hole. He was safe. But now, there were three long lines on his back, from his head to his tail.
The little squirrel was now a chipmunk. And today, every chipmunk has those stripes.
