A donkey and a horse lived on the same farm. The donkey worked very hard every day. He carried heavy bags of wheat to the market. He got only a little dry grass to eat.
But the horse had an easy life. He was the war horse of a soldier. He did not carry bags. He ate the best oats every day. People brushed him and cleaned him. He lived in a warm, clean stable.
"Oh, you lucky horse," said the donkey one evening. "Your life is so easy. Everyone takes care of you. And look at me! I work all day, and I am always hungry. I want a life like yours."
The horse only shook his head and said nothing.
Then one day, a war began. The soldier put on his armor. He put a heavy saddle on the horse and jumped on his back. They rode away to the battle. The donkey watched from the farm.
Many days later, the soldier came back. But the horse was not with him. The donkey heard the news. In the battle, the horse was badly hurt. He never came home again.
The donkey stood still for a long time. He looked at his heavy bags and his dry grass. "Poor horse," he said quietly. "My life is hard. But maybe I am the lucky one after all."
