Tezuka Osamu was born in Osaka in 1928. When he was a boy, he loved bugs. He watched them for hours and drew them in his notebook. He liked bugs so much that later he put the word mushi, which means bug, into his pen name.
手塚治虫は1928年、大阪で生まれました。子どものころは虫が大好きで、何時間も虫をながめては、ノートに描いていました。あまりに虫が好きだったので、のちにペンネームにも「虫」という字を入れたほどです。
He also loved to draw comics. His friends at school loved his comics too.
マンガを描くのも大好きでした。学校の友だちも、治虫のマンガが大好きでした。
During the war, life was very hard. There was not much food, and bombs fell on cities. Osamu still drew comics. After the war, he wanted to tell stories about peace and life.
戦争中の暮らしは、とても苦しいものでした。食べ物は少なく、町には爆弾が落ちてきました。それでも治虫は、マンガを描きつづけました。戦争が終わると、平和と命を物語で伝えたいと思うようになりました。
Osamu also studied to be a doctor. He became a real doctor! But he had to choose. Should he be a doctor or a comic artist? There is a story about this. His mother said, "Do the work you love most." So he chose comics.
治虫は医者になるための勉強もしていました。そして、本当に医者になったのです！けれども、どちらかを選ばなければなりません。医者になるか、マンガ家になるか。これについては、こんな話が伝わっています。母親が「いちばん好きな仕事をしなさい」と言ったのです。そこで、治虫はマンガを選びました。
His comics were new. They moved like movies. One of his early books, New Treasure Island, sold a lot of copies. Children all over Japan read it.
治虫のマンガは新しいものでした。まるで映画のように、絵が動いて見えたのです。初期の作品『新宝島』は大ヒットし、日本中の子どもたちに読まれました。
His most famous hero is Astro Boy, a robot boy with a kind heart. In 1963, Astro Boy became a TV anime. It was the first thirty-minute anime series in Japan shown every week on TV.
いちばん有名なヒーローは、優しい心を持ったロボットの少年、アトムです。1963年、『鉄腕アトム』はテレビアニメになりました。毎週テレビで放送される30分のアニメシリーズとしては、日本で初めてのものでした。
He also made many other comics, such as Kimba the White Lion and Black Jack, a story about a doctor. He drew about one hundred and fifty thousand pages in his life!
ほかにも、『ジャングル大帝』や、医者が主人公の『ブラック・ジャック』など、たくさんのマンガを生み出しました。生涯に描いた原稿は、およそ15万ページにもなります！
People call him the God of Manga. He worked until he died at the age of sixty. It is said that he kept drawing even in the hospital.
治虫は「マンガの神様」と呼ばれています。60歳で亡くなるまで、仕事を続けました。入院してからも、病院で描きつづけていたといわれています。
His stories ask big questions. What is life? What does it mean to be kind? Today, many manga and anime artists still learn from him.
