Lou Gehrig was a baseball player. He played for the New York Yankees. He was big and strong, but he was also quiet and shy.
ルー・ゲーリッグは野球選手でした。所属はニューヨーク・ヤンキースです。体が大きく力も強い一方で、物静かで内気な人でした。
Lou played every day. He played when he was sick. He played when he was hurt. He played in more than two thousand games in a row! People called him "the Iron Horse."
ルーは毎日試合に出ました。病気のときも、けがをしたときも出ました。2000試合を超える連続出場です！人々はルーを「鉄の馬」と呼びました。
But in 1938, something was wrong. Lou felt weak. He could not hit the ball well. Sometimes he fell down. In May 1939, he stopped playing.
ところが1938年、ルーの様子がどこかおかしくなりました。体に力が入らず、ボールをうまく打てなくなりました。ときには転ぶこともありました。1939年5月、ルーは試合に出るのをやめました。
Doctors found that he had a very serious illness. Its name was ALS. It makes the body weaker and weaker. There was no cure.
医者に診てもらうと、とても重い病気だとわかりました。病名はALS（筋萎縮性側索硬化症）。体がだんだん弱っていく病気で、治す方法はありませんでした。
On July 4, 1939, the team had a special day for Lou at Yankee Stadium. About sixty thousand people came. His old teammates came too. They gave him many gifts.
1939年7月4日、ヤンキー・スタジアムで、チームがルーのための特別な日をもうけました。およそ6万人が集まりました。昔のチームメートたちも駆けつけました。ルーはたくさんの贈り物を受け取りました。
Lou stood in front of the microphones. At first, he did not want to speak. He looked down at the ground. But the crowd called his name again and again.
ルーはマイクの前に立ちました。はじめは話す気になれず、うつむいて地面を見ていました。けれども観客は、何度も何度もルーの名前を呼びました。
So Lou began. He did not talk about his illness very much. He talked about his good life. He thanked his fans, his teammates, his mother and father, and his wife. He said he was "the luckiest man on the face of the earth."
そこでルーは話し始めました。病気のことには、あまり触れませんでした。話したのは、自分の恵まれた人生のことです。ファンに、チームメートに、父と母に、そして妻に感謝しました。そして、自分は「地球上でいちばん幸運な男」だと言ったのです。
When he finished, everyone stood up and clapped. His old teammate Babe Ruth hugged him. Many people in the stadium were crying.
話し終えると、全員が立ち上がって拍手しました。かつてのチームメート、ベーブ・ルースがルーを抱きしめました。スタジアムでは多くの人が泣いていました。
Lou died two years later. He was only thirty-seven. But people still remember his words. He was very sick, but he did not think about what he lost. He thought about what he had.
ルーは2年後に亡くなりました。まだ37歳でした。それでも人々は、今もあの言葉を覚えています。重い病気を抱えながら、ルーは失ったものではなく、自分が持っているものに目を向けたのです。
