In 1992, leaders from almost every country met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was a very big meeting about the Earth. People called it the Earth Summit.
1992年、ブラジルのリオデジャネイロに、世界のほとんどすべての国のリーダーが集まりました。地球について話し合う、とても大きな会議です。この会議は「地球サミット」と呼ばれました。
A girl from Canada wanted to go there. Her name was Severn Cullis-Suzuki. She was twelve years old. Her father was a Japanese-Canadian scientist.
カナダに、その会議へ行きたいと思った女の子がいました。名前はセヴァン・カリス＝スズキ。12歳でした。お父さんは日系カナダ人の科学者でした。
Severn and her friends had a small group. It was called ECO. They wanted to help the environment. They worked hard and saved money for the long trip to Brazil.
セヴァンは友だちと小さなグループを作っていました。名前はECO。メンバーたちは、環境を守るために何かしたいと考えていました。みんなで一生懸命働いてお金をため、ブラジルまでの長い旅に備えました。
In Rio, the children got a chance to speak to the adults at the meeting. Severn's speech was only about six minutes long.
リオでは、子どもたちが会議に集まった大人たちの前で話す機会をもらいました。セヴァンのスピーチは、わずか6分ほどでした。
She talked about fish and animals that were dying. She talked about dirty air and lost forests. She also talked about poor children she saw in the streets of Rio. They had no homes.
セヴァンは、死んでいく魚や動物のことを話しました。汚れた空気や、失われた森のことも話しました。そして、リオの通りで見かけた貧しい子どもたちのことも話しました。その子たちには家がなかったのです。
Then she asked the adults a simple question. Adults teach children not to fight, to clean up, and to share. So why do adults not do these things? She told them that if they did not know how to fix the Earth, they should "please stop breaking it."
それからセヴァンは、大人たちに素朴な問いを投げかけました。大人は子どもに、けんかをしないこと、散らかしたら片づけること、分け合うことを教えます。それなのに、なぜ大人自身はそうしないのでしょうか。そして、地球の直し方がわからないのなら、「どうか壊し続けるのはやめてください」と訴えたのです。
The big room became very quiet. When she finished, many adults stood up and clapped. It is said that some had tears in their eyes.
大きな会場は、しんと静まりかえりました。セヴァンが話し終えると、多くの大人が立ち上がって拍手しました。目に涙を浮かべた人もいたといいます。
Later, people called her "the girl who silenced the world for five minutes." Students in many countries, including Japan, still watch her speech today.
のちにセヴァンは、「5分間、世界を沈黙させた少女」と呼ばれるようになりました。日本を含む多くの国の生徒たちが、今もこのスピーチを見ています。
Severn grew up and kept working for the Earth. Her message is still the same. Children can speak, and adults must listen.
セヴァンは大人になってからも、地球のための活動を続けました。そのメッセージは今も変わりません。子どもは声を上げることができ、大人はその声を聞かなければならない、ということです。
