Long ago, the parts of the body could talk. The hands could talk, the feet could talk, and the mouth and the eyes could talk too.
むかしむかし、体のいろいろな部分が、口をきくことができました。手もしゃべれましたし、足もしゃべれましたし、口や目もしゃべれました。
One day, the hands got angry. "We work all day," they said. "We pick the food. We carry it. We cook it. But who eats it all? The stomach! The stomach does nothing. It just sits there and eats."
ある日、手たちが怒りだしました。「ぼくたちは一日中働いている」と、手たちは言いました。「食べ物を取って、運んで、料理する。なのに、それを全部食べるのは誰だ？ おなかだ！ おなかは何もしない。ただそこにいて、食べているだけじゃないか」
"That's right!" said the feet. "We walk to the market every day. We are so tired."
「その通り！」と、足たちが言いました。「ぼくたちは毎日、市場まで歩いていく。もうくたくただよ」
"Me too!" said the mouth. "I chew and chew all day. And for what? For that lazy stomach!"
「わたしもよ！」と、口が言いました。「一日中かんで、かんで、かみっぱなし。それも何のため？ あの怠け者のおなかのためよ！」
"We look for food all day," said the eyes. "It is not fair!"
「ぼくたちは一日中、食べ物を探しているんだ」と、目たちが言いました。「こんなの不公平だ！」
So they made a plan. "Let's stop working," said the hands. "No more food for the lazy stomach!" Everyone agreed.
そこで、みんなは計画を立てました。「働くのをやめよう」と、手たちが言いました。「怠け者のおなかには、もう食べ物をやらないぞ！」みんなが賛成しました。
The next day, the hands did not pick any food. The feet did not walk to the market. The mouth did not chew. The stomach got nothing.
次の日、手は食べ物を一つも取りませんでした。足は市場へ歩いていきませんでした。口はかみませんでした。おなかには、何も入ってきませんでした。
One day went by, then two days, then three. Then something strange happened. The hands felt weak. The feet felt heavy. The mouth was dry, and the eyes could not see well. The whole body was tired and sick.
一日がたち、二日がたち、三日がたちました。すると、不思議なことが起こりました。手は力が入らなくなりました。足は重くなりました。口はからからに渇き、目はよく見えなくなりました。体中がぐったりして、具合が悪くなったのです。
"What is wrong with us?" asked the feet.
「ぼくたち、どうしちゃったんだろう？」と、足たちが尋ねました。
"I know," said the hands slowly. "The stomach is not lazy. It works too. It takes the food and gives us all our strength. Without the stomach, we can't live."
「わかったよ」と、手たちがゆっくり言いました。「おなかは怠け者なんかじゃない。おなかも働いているんだ。食べ物を受け取って、ぼくたちみんなに力をくれている。おなかがなかったら、ぼくたちは生きていけないんだ」
So they all went back to work. The hands picked food, the feet walked, and the mouth chewed. Soon the whole body was strong and happy again.
そこで、みんなは仕事に戻りました。手は食べ物を取り、足は歩き、口はかみました。まもなく、体全体がまた元気になり、みんな幸せになりました。
