A little mole lived under the ground with his mother. Moles can't see well. Their eyes are very, very small. But they have good noses, and they can smell almost everything.
One day, the little mole said, "Mother, guess what? I can see!"
His mother smiled. "Can you, my dear?"
"Yes!" said the little mole. "I can see everything. I am not like the other moles. My eyes are great!"
His mother wanted to teach him a lesson. She took out a small piece of incense. It was sweet and smelled very strong, like flowers and honey. She put it in front of his nose.
"Then tell me," she said. "What is this?"
The little mole looked at it very hard. He opened his eyes as wide as he could. "Hmm," he said. "It is... a little stone!"
His mother laughed and shook her head. "Oh, my son," she said. "It is not a stone. It is sweet incense. You can't see it. That is true. But now I know something worse. You can't smell it either!"
The little mole's face got hot. "Oh," he said quietly. Then he laughed too. "Maybe my eyes are not so great after all," he said. "And maybe my nose was sleeping!"
