It was a December night. A father was sitting at the kotatsu with his five-year-old son in his arms.
"Daddy, tell me a story!" "What kind of story?" "A tiger story!" "A tiger story? That's hard." "Please!"
"All right. Long ago in Korea, a soldier with a trumpet drank too much and fell asleep on a mountain road. Then his face got wet, and he woke up. A big tiger was washing his face with its wet tail."
"Why?" "The soldier smelled of wine. The tiger wanted to wash the smell off and then eat him." "And then?" "The soldier pushed his trumpet hard into the tiger's bottom. The tiger ran away to the town."
"Did it die?" "Yes, in the middle of the town. But the trumpet in its bottom went toot, toot, toot until it died." The boy laughed. "And the soldier?" "He got a prize for killing the tiger. The end."
"One more!" "Not a tiger story this time." "No, a tiger story!" "Oh, well. A hunter in Korea saw a big tiger in a valley below him. He got his gun ready."
"Did he shoot it?" "The tiger jumped at a big rock. But it could not reach the rock and fell down. It jumped again and fell again. Then it walked away with its tail down, looking embarrassed."
"So he didn't shoot it?" "No. The tiger looked so much like a person that he felt sorry for it." "That's boring. Another tiger story!" "How about Puss in Boots?" "No! A tiger story!"
"Oh, all right. A big tiger had three babies. Every evening, it played with them, and at night they all slept in a cave. Hey, don't fall asleep." "Mm," said the boy sleepily.
"One autumn evening, the tiger came home almost dead from a hunter's arrow. The babies knew nothing and jumped on it. Still, the tiger played with them as always. At night, they all slept together. But in the morning, the tiger was dead in the middle of the three babies. The babies were surprised, and... Hey, are you awake?"
The boy did not answer. He was asleep. "Hey, is anyone there?" the father called. "He has fallen asleep." From far away came an answer: "Yes, I'm coming!"
