Long ago, an old monk lived in a temple. He loved green tea. One day, he bought an old chagama at the market. A chagama is an iron teakettle.
"What a nice kettle," he said. He filled it with water and put it on the fire.
"Hot! Hot! Hot!" shouted the kettle. A furry tail came out. Four little legs came out. A face came out! It was a tanuki. A tanuki is a raccoon dog. Tanuki can change into things.
The tanuki ran around the room. The monk was so surprised that he fell over. Then the tanuki turned back into a kettle.
"This kettle is strange," said the monk. He sold it to a junk man for a little money.
That night, the kettle spoke to the junk man. "Please do not put me on a fire. I am a tanuki. My name is Bunbuku. I can do tricks. Let's make a show together!"
So the junk man made a little stage. People came from all over. Bunbuku had a kettle body and tanuki legs. He walked on a rope. He danced with a fan. He did flips in the air. "Wow!" everyone shouted.
The junk man became rich. But Bunbuku was getting tired. "Thank you, my friend," said the man. "You worked so hard. Now please rest."
He took Bunbuku back to the temple with half of the money. The monk was happy. He never put Bunbuku on the fire again. And the lucky kettle stayed at the temple for a long, long time.
