A rich man went to the market. He bought two birds, a goose and a swan. He took them home to his big house by the river.
"The goose is for eating," he said. "One day, she can be a big dinner. And the swan is for singing. Her song is beautiful. I can listen to it every evening."
So the two birds lived together in the garden. The goose ate a lot of food and got fat. Every evening, the swan sang her lovely song, and the rich man smiled.
One day, the rich man planned a big party. "Cook the goose tonight," he told his cook.
The cook went out to the garden late at night. It was very dark. There was no moon. He could not see the birds well. "Both birds are big and white," he said. "Which one is the goose?" He put out his hands and caught one bird. But it was not the goose. It was the swan!
The swan was very scared. She did not cry. She did not fight. She opened her beak and sang. She sang the most beautiful song of her life.
The cook stopped. "Oh! This is the swan, not the goose!" he said. "I know that song." He gently put the swan down.
The swan was safe. Her beautiful song saved her life. And that night, she sang again by the river, just for the stars.
