On a hill, a tall fir tree stood next to a small thornbush. The fir tree was very proud. Its trunk was straight and strong, and it went high into the sky.
One day, the fir tree looked down at the thornbush. "Look at you," it said. "You are small, and you have ugly thorns. Nobody wants you. You are good for nothing."
The thornbush did not answer.
"But look at me," said the fir tree. "I am tall and beautiful. People love me. They use my wood for their houses. They use it for roofs, for ships, and for big halls. I am very important."
The thornbush was quiet for a moment. Then it spoke. "Yes, you are tall," it said. "But do you see those men?"
The fir tree looked down the hill. Some men were on the path. They had big axes and long saws on their backs.
"People want your wood," said the thornbush. "So those men will cut you down soon. But nobody wants me. Nobody cuts me down. I can live here in peace for a long, long time."
The fir tree looked at the axes. Its branches began to shake. For the first time in its life, it wanted to be a small thornbush.
