Long ago, there was a king named Midas. He had a big palace and a little daughter. But King Midas loved one thing most of all. He loved gold.
Every day, he counted his gold coins. "I want more," he said. "I want more gold!"
One day, a god came to the palace. "You were kind to my old friend," said the god. "I will give you one wish."
King Midas did not stop to think. "Please make everything I touch turn into gold!"
"Are you sure?" asked the god.
"Yes, yes!" said the king.
"Then it is yours," said the god, and he went away.
King Midas touched a stone. It turned into gold! He touched a chair. It turned into gold, too! He ran into the garden and touched a red rose. "I am the happiest king in the world!" he cried.
Soon, the king was hungry. He took some bread, but it turned into gold. He took a cup of water. The water turned into gold, too. He could not eat or drink.
"Oh no," said King Midas. He was not happy now.
Then his little daughter ran into the room. "Father, why are you sad?" she said. She ran to him and gave him a big hug.
At that moment, she stopped. She did not move. She did not speak. She was gold, from her hair to her little feet.
"No! No!" cried the king. "My girl! My dear girl!" Big tears ran down his face. "I don't want gold. I want my daughter!"
The god came back. "Do you still love gold, King Midas?" he asked.
"No," said the king. "Please take my golden touch away."
"Go to the river," said the god. "Wash in the water. Then bring some water home."
The king ran to the river and jumped into the cold water. Then he took some water home. He put it on his daughter.
His daughter opened her eyes. "Father, why am I wet?" she asked. The king laughed and cried and gave her a long hug.
After that, King Midas did not count his gold. He played in the garden with his daughter every day. He was happier than ever before.
