Once upon a time, a little old woman and a little old man lived in a little house. They had no children. So one day, the old woman made a boy out of gingerbread. She gave him two raisins for eyes and a sugar smile. Then she put him in the oven.
むかしむかし、小さなおばあさんと小さなおじいさんが、小さな家に住んでいました。二人には子どもがいませんでした。そこである日、おばあさんはジンジャーブレッドで男の子を作りました。目には干しぶどうを二つつけ、砂糖でにっこり笑った口を描きました。それから、オーブンに入れました。
After a while, she opened the oven door. Out jumped the Gingerbread Man! He ran out of the kitchen, out of the house and down the road.
しばらくして、おばあさんはオーブンの扉を開けました。すると、ジンジャーブレッドマンが飛び出してきたのです！ ジンジャーブレッドマンは台所を飛び出し、家を飛び出し、道を走っていきました。
"Stop! Stop!" cried the old woman and the old man. They ran after him, but he was too fast.
「待って！ 待って！」と、おばあさんとおじいさんは叫びました。二人は後を追いかけましたが、ジンジャーブレッドマンは速すぎて追いつけませんでした。
He looked back and laughed. "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Man!"
ジンジャーブレッドマンは振り返って笑いました。「走れ、走れ、うんと速く！ ぼくはつかまらないよ。ぼくはジンジャーブレッドマン！」
Soon he met a cow. "Stop, little man! You look good to eat," said the cow. But the Gingerbread Man ran faster.
やがて、ジンジャーブレッドマンは牛に出会いました。「待ちなさい、おちびさん！ おいしそうだね」と、牛は言いました。けれども、ジンジャーブレッドマンはもっと速く走りました。
"I ran away from an old woman and an old man, and I can run away from you, too! Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Man!"
「ぼくはおばあさんとおじいさんから逃げてきたんだ。きみからだって逃げられるさ！ 走れ、走れ、うんと速く！ ぼくはつかまらないよ。ぼくはジンジャーブレッドマン！」
The cow could not catch him. Then he ran past a horse and some farmers in a field. They all ran after him, but no one could catch him.
牛はジンジャーブレッドマンをつかまえられませんでした。それから、ジンジャーブレッドマンは、馬と、畑にいるお百姓さんたちのそばを走り抜けました。みんなが後を追いかけましたが、誰もジンジャーブレッドマンを捕まえられませんでした。
At last he met a fox. The fox lay by the road. He did not run. "What did you say?" asked the fox. "I can't hear you very well."
とうとう、ジンジャーブレッドマンはキツネに出会いました。キツネは道ばたに寝そべっていて、走ろうとはしませんでした。「なんて言ったんだい？」と、キツネは尋ねました。「よく聞こえないんだよ」
The Gingerbread Man stopped. He came a little closer and shouted, "I ran away from an old woman and an old man. I ran away from a cow, a horse and the farmers. And I can run away from you!"
ジンジャーブレッドマンは立ち止まりました。そして少し近づいて、大声で叫びました。「ぼくはおばあさんからも、おじいさんからも逃げてきたんだ。牛からも、馬からも、お百姓さんたちからも逃げてきたんだ。きみからだって逃げられるさ！」
"I still can't hear you," said the fox. "Come closer, please."
「まだ聞こえないなあ」と、キツネは言いました。「どうか、もっと近くに来ておくれ」
So the Gingerbread Man came very close. "I CAN RUN AWAY FROM..."
そこでジンジャーブレッドマンは、すぐそばまで近づきました。「ぼくは、きみからだって、逃げられ……」
SNAP! The fox opened his big mouth, and that was the end of the Gingerbread Man.
パクッ！ キツネが大きな口を開けました。それが、ジンジャーブレッドマンの最後でした。
