A farmer had a faithful horse. The horse was old now, and he could not work any more. So the farmer did not want to feed him.
"I don't need you now," said the farmer. "But I am a kind man. If you can bring me a lion, I will keep you. Now go away!" And he sent the horse out into the fields.
The poor horse walked sadly into the forest. There he met the fox. "Why do you look so sad?" asked the fox.
"My master forgot all my years of hard work," said the horse. "I cannot pull the plow well now, so he sent me away. He will keep me only if I bring him a lion. But he knows I can't do that."
"I will help you," said the fox. "Lie down and stretch out your legs. Don't move at all. Look like a dead horse." The horse did so.
The lion lived in a cave nearby. The fox went to him and said, "There is a dead horse out there. Come with me. You can have a big dinner."
The lion came with him. When they stood by the horse, the fox said, "It is not nice to eat here. Let me tie the horse to you with its tail. Then you can pull it into your cave and eat in peace."
The lion liked this idea. He lay down and kept very still. But the fox tied the lion's legs together with the horse's tail. He tied them so tightly that no one could undo the knots.
Then the fox patted the horse on the shoulder. "Pull, white horse, pull!" The horse jumped up and ran off, and he pulled the lion behind him.
The lion roared so loudly that all the birds flew out of the trees. But the horse did not stop. He pulled the lion over the fields, all the way to the farmer's door.
When the farmer saw the lion, he changed his mind. "You will stay with me," he said to the horse, "and you will have a good life." And he gave the horse plenty to eat for the rest of his life.
