A hunter had a great dog. In his young days, the dog was the best hunting dog in the land. He was fast and strong. No animal in the forest could get away from him.
But years went by, and the dog got old. His legs got slow. His teeth got weak. Some of them fell out.
One day, the hunter took the old dog to the forest. Suddenly, a big wild boar ran out of the trees. "Get him!" shouted the hunter.
The old dog ran as fast as he could. He jumped at the boar and caught its ear in his mouth. He held on tight. But his old teeth were not strong anymore. The ear slipped out of his mouth, and the boar ran away into the forest.
The hunter ran up. He was very angry. "You bad dog!" he shouted. "You useless old thing! Why did you let it go?"
The old dog looked up at his master with sad eyes. "Master," he said, "it was not my fault. My heart is as brave as ever. But my body is old now. I can't help that."
"Remember me," he went on. "Remember the young dog. For many years, I caught so many animals for you. Don't be angry with me for what I am now. Be thankful for what I was."
The hunter looked at the dog for a long time. Then he knelt down and gently touched his gray head. "I am sorry, old friend," he said. "You are right."
