It was the middle of winter. A hungry crow flew over the fields. There was no food anywhere. Then she saw a fig tree. It had many little green figs on its branches.
"Figs!" she said happily. "Sweet, delicious figs!" She landed on a branch and pecked one. But it was hard and sour. "Yuck! They are not ripe yet," she said. "Never mind. I can wait. In a few days, they will be soft and sweet."
So the crow sat on the branch and waited. She waited all day. She waited all night. The wind was cold, and her stomach was empty. But she did not move.
The next morning, a fox walked by. He saw the crow on the branch. "Good morning," he said. "Why do you sit in that tree for so long?"
"I am waiting for these figs," said the crow. "Soon they will be ripe, and I can eat them all!"
The fox looked at the little green figs. Then he looked at the cold gray sky. He shook his head.
"Oh, my poor friend," he said. "It is winter. These figs came at the wrong time. They can never get ripe in this cold. You have a big hope, but that hope is fooling you. It can never give you dinner. Go and find real food!"
The crow looked at the hard little figs. Then she looked at the cold sky. "Maybe he is right," she thought. At last, she flew away and looked for food in the fields.
