A big bull stood in a green field. He was very large and strong. He ate grass all morning and did not think about anything.
大きな雄牛が、緑の野原に立っていました。雄牛はとても大きくて、力も強いのです。朝のあいだずっと草を食べていて、何も考えていませんでした。
A tiny gnat flew over the field. "What a nice big horn!" he said. "I can sit there." So he landed on the tip of the bull's horn.
ちっちゃなブヨが、野原の上を飛んでいました。「なんて立派な、大きな角だろう！」と、ブヨは言いました。「あそこにとまろう」そこでブヨは、雄牛の角の先にとまりました。
The gnat sat there for a long time. He looked around at the field. "What a great place," he thought. "I am so high up. I am the king of this field!"
ブヨは長いあいだ、そこにとまっていました。野原を見回して、「なんて素晴らしい場所だろう」とブヨは思いました。「こんなに高いところにいるんだ。ぼくはこの野原の王さまだ！」
Then it was time for the gnat to go. Before he flew away, he made a loud buzzing noise. "Bzzzz! Excuse me, Mr. Bull," he said. "I am very sorry. I sat on your horn for a long time. I was very heavy, I know. Do you want me to go now? Or can I stay a little longer?"
やがて、ブヨが立ち去る時が来ました。飛び立つ前に、ブヨは大きな羽音を立てました。「ブーン！ 失礼します、雄牛さん」と、ブヨは言いました。「本当にすみません。長いあいだ、あなたの角にとまっていました。さぞ重かったでしょうね。もう行ったほうがいいですか？ それとも、もう少しいてもいいですか？」
The bull looked up. "Hmm?" he said. "Who is talking?"
雄牛は顔を上げました。「うん？」と、雄牛は言いました。「誰がしゃべっているんだ？」
"It's me, the gnat! On your horn!"
「ぼくです、ブヨです！ あなたの角の上にいます！」
The bull blinked. "Oh," he said. "I did not know you were there. I did not feel you come. And I don't care at all about your going. Fly away, little one, or stay. It is all the same to me."
雄牛はまばたきしました。「ああ」と、雄牛は言いました。「おまえがそこにいるなんて、知らなかったよ。来たのも気づかなかった。それに、おまえが行こうが行くまいが、ちっともかまわないよ。飛んでいくなり、いるなり、好きにしなさい、おちびさん。わたしにはどっちでも同じことだ」
The gnat's little face went red. He flew away quickly and quietly. He did not feel like a king anymore.
ブヨの小さな顔は、真っ赤になりました。ブヨは、素早く、こっそりと飛んでいきました。もう、王さまのような気分ではありませんでした。
