There was once a young shepherd boy. Every day, he took the sheep up a green hill near his village. He sat on a rock and watched them all day.
The work was easy, but it was very boring. "Nothing happens here," he said. "I want some fun."
Then he had an idea. He stood up and shouted, "Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is eating the sheep!"
The people in the village heard him. They dropped their work and ran up the hill. Some had sticks, and some had stones. But there was no wolf.
The boy laughed and laughed. "There is no wolf! I tricked you!" The people were angry, and they went back down the hill.
A few days later, the boy did it again. "Wolf! Wolf! Help me!" Again the people ran up the hill. Again there was no wolf. The boy laughed at them. "You are so funny!" he said.
Then one evening, a real wolf came out of the forest. It was big and gray, and it had sharp teeth. It ran at the sheep.
The boy was very scared. "Wolf! Wolf!" he shouted. "Please come! This time it is true!"
The people in the village heard him, but nobody came. "That boy is lying again," they said. "We can't believe him." So they stayed at home.
The wolf chased the sheep all over the hill, and the sheep ran away into the dark forest. The boy sat on his rock and cried. He lost all his sheep, and it was his own fault.
