Some little frogs lived in a pond with their mother. One day, the little frogs played by the water. Then a huge ox came to the pond for a drink.
小さなカエルたちが、お母さんと一緒に池に住んでいました。ある日、子ガエルたちは水辺で遊んでいました。すると、とても大きな雄牛が、水を飲みに池へやって来ました。
The ox did not see the frogs. His big feet went stomp, stomp, stomp in the mud. One foot came down very close to the little frogs. "Run!" they cried. They jumped away and hid under the leaves.

After the ox left, the little frogs hurried home. "Mother! Mother!" they shouted. "We saw a monster! It was so big! It had four big feet and two horns on its head!"
雄牛が行ってしまうと、子ガエルたちは急いで家に帰りました。「お母さん！ お母さん！」と、子ガエルたちは叫びました。「怪物を見たよ！ すっごく大きかったんだ！ 大きな足が四本あって、頭に角が二本あったよ！」
"A monster?" said the mother frog. "How big was it? Was it this big?" She took a deep breath and puffed herself up. Her body got a little bigger.
「怪物ですって？」と、お母さんガエルは言いました。「どれくらい大きかったの？ このくらい？」お母さんは大きく息を吸って、体を膨らませました。お母さんの体は少し大きくなりました。
"Oh, no, Mother. Much bigger!" said the little frogs.
「違うよ、お母さん。もっとずっと大きかったよ！」と、子ガエルたちは言いました。
"This big?" She took another breath, and another. Her body got rounder and rounder.
「このくらい？」お母さんはもうひと息、さらにもうひと息吸いこみました。お母さんの体は、どんどん丸くなっていきました。
"No, no! Much, much bigger!"
「違う、違う！ もっと、もっとずっと大きかったよ！」
The mother frog was a proud frog. "I can be big too," she said. She puffed and puffed. Her eyes popped out. Her green skin got very tight. She looked like a balloon.

At last, the mother frog let out all her air. Pffffff! She sat down on her lily pad, very tired. "Well," she said quietly, "maybe that monster is a little bigger than me."
とうとう、お母さんガエルは空気をすっかり吐き出しました。プシューッ！ お母さんはへとへとになって、スイレンの葉の上に座りこみました。「まあ」と、お母さんは小さな声で言いました。「その怪物は、わたしよりちょっとだけ大きいのかもしれないわね」
