Lucy lived on a small farm. One spring morning, she found ten eggs in a nest behind the barn. "Ten eggs!" she said. "Soon I will have ten little chickens!"
She ran into the house. "Ten chickens will grow up and lay lots of eggs," she said. "I can sell the eggs at the market. Then I can buy a new bike, a red one. And then I can ride to the lake with my friends every day!"
Her grandmother was drinking tea. "Lucy," she said, "don't count your chickens before they hatch."
"But Grandma, I counted the eggs. There are ten!"
Three weeks later, the eggs began to crack. Lucy watched carefully. One, two, three... ten babies came out. They were small and yellow and very cute.
But then they walked straight to the pond and started to swim. "Quack!" said one. "Quack, quack!" said the others.
They were not chickens. They were ducks! The nest belonged to a mother duck.
Grandma laughed. "Well, Lucy, you can't buy a bike with their eggs yet. But you can swim in the lake with them!"
"Don't count your chickens before they hatch." This means you should not make plans based on something before you really have it.
