The Ito family planned a big picnic for Sunday. Mom made rice balls. Dad made sandwiches. Little Rina made a very strange cake with too much sugar.
On Sunday morning, it rained. It rained a lot. "Our picnic is ruined!" cried Rina.
Grandpa looked out of the window. "Every cloud has a silver lining," he said. Rina looked at the dark clouds. "I can't see any silver," she said.
So the family had the picnic on the living room floor. They put down the blanket and opened the boxes. Dad pretended to be an ant and tried to steal the sandwiches. Everyone laughed.
Then the doorbell rang. It was their neighbor, Mrs. Sato. Her picnic was ruined, too, and she had a big box of strawberries. Then the Kato boys came with a board game. Soon, twelve people were sitting on the living room floor.
In the evening, the rain stopped. A big rainbow came out over the town. Rina's cake was the only food left, so everyone tried a little piece. It was terrible, but everyone smiled.
"That was the best picnic ever!" said Rina. Grandpa smiled. "You see? There was silver behind the cloud after all."
"Every cloud has a silver lining." A silver lining is the bright edge that you can sometimes see around a dark cloud. The proverb means that even in a bad situation, there is often something good.
