Japan has many volcanoes, so it also has many onsen, or hot springs. The water comes from deep under the ground, and it is naturally hot. People in Japan love to relax at onsen. But there are some rules. Let's learn them!
Rule one: Wash your body first. Sit at the washing area and wash your body well. Then get into the hot water. The hot water is for everyone, so it must stay clean.
Rule two: No swimsuits! In most onsen, people go into the water with no clothes on. Men and women usually use different baths. It may feel strange at first, but people usually do not look at others.
Rule three: Keep your towel out of the water. You can bring a small towel, but do not put it in the bath. Many people fold it and put it on their head!
Rule four: Do you have long hair? Then tie it up. Then it does not go into the water.
Rule five: Be quiet and relax. Do not swim or run. And the hot water makes you thirsty, so remember to drink some water.
One more thing: some onsen do not let people with tattoos come in. It is a good idea to check before you go.
Here is a fun fact. People are not the only ones who love onsen. In the mountains of Nagano, wild monkeys come to sit in a hot spring on cold, snowy days!
