Sakura do not stay for long. Most trees are in full bloom for only about one week. Then the wind blows, and the petals fall like snow. People in Japan love the sakura because they are beautiful, and also because they are gone so soon.
Sakura do not bloom at the same time everywhere. Okinawa is warm, so its sakura bloom first, in January or February. Then the sakura bloom in Kyushu, Tokyo, and the north. In Hokkaido, people often see sakura in May! Every spring, the news shows a map of this sakura line.
Many sakura trees in Japan are Somei Yoshino trees. Here is a surprise. All Somei Yoshino trees came from one tree long ago! People cut small branches from the trees and grew new trees. So the trees are like brothers and sisters, and in one place they bloom at almost the same time.
In 1912, Japan gave about three thousand sakura trees to Washington, D.C., in America. Today, people there have a big sakura festival every spring, too.
