Look up on a sunny day. The sky is blue. But why? Why not green or pink?
Light from the sun looks white. But it is really many colors together: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. You can see these colors in a rainbow.
The air around the earth has very, very small things in it. They are too small to see. Sunlight comes into the air and hits these small things. Red light mostly goes straight. But blue light bounces around a lot. It goes this way and that way, all over the sky.
So when you look up, blue light comes to your eyes from every part of the sky. That is why the sky looks blue.
Then why is the sky red and orange in the evening? In the evening, the sun is low. Its light travels through much more air on the way to you. On the long way, most of the blue light bounces away. So more red and orange light gets to your eyes, and the sunset looks red and orange.
Here is one more surprise. On the moon, there is no air. So there is nothing to bounce the light around. Even in the day, the sky on the moon is black!
