You see crows almost every day. They are black and noisy, and sometimes they tear open garbage bags. Many people do not like them. But crows are some of the cleverest birds in the world.
In Sendai, a city in the north of Japan, some crows found a smart way to eat walnuts. A walnut has a very hard shell. A crow cannot easily break it. So the crows put walnuts on the road. Cars drive over the walnuts and break the shells. Then the crows come down and eat the nuts inside.
On an island called New Caledonia, crows make tools. A crow takes a small stick and makes a hook at the end. Then it uses the stick to pull bugs out of holes in trees.
Crows can also remember people's faces. In America, some scientists wore a special mask and caught some crows. Then they let the crows go. Later, a person in that mask walked by. The crows shouted at the person! Even other crows joined in. The scientists never caught those crows! Then a person in a different mask walked by. This time, the crows were quiet.
So be nice to crows. They are watching you, and they may remember your face!
