Mr. Straw was a scarecrow. He stood in the middle of a cornfield. He stood there in the sun, in the rain and in the snow. He never sat down, and he never went home.
His job was to scare the birds. But Mr. Straw was a kind scarecrow. He never really scared anyone. The birds sat on his hat and told him stories.
One day, the farmer came with a big gold medal. "Mr. Straw," she said, "you win the prize for the best worker on the farm!"
The cows were surprised. The horse was surprised. "Why him?" asked the horse. "He just stands there all day!"
The farmer smiled. "That's why," she said. "He is outstanding in his field."
The birds cheered. Mr. Straw could not move, but he was smiling inside.
"Outstanding" means very, very good. A field is also the kind of work that you do. But "out standing in his field" means that he is standing outside in his cornfield. Mr. Straw is outstanding in both ways!
