Once there was a shepherd boy. He was very wise. People asked him many questions, and he always had a good answer.
むかし、ひとりの羊飼いの男の子がいました。とても賢い子でした。みんながいろいろなことを尋ねましたが、男の子はいつも、うまく答えるのでした。
The king heard about him, but he did not believe it. So he called the boy to his palace. "I will ask you three questions," said the king. "If you can answer them, you will be my son and live with me here."
王さまはそのうわさを聞きましたが、信じませんでした。そこで、男の子をお城に呼びよせました。「三つ、質問をしよう」と、王さまは言いました。「もし答えられたら、おまえをわしの息子にして、ここで一緒に暮らさせてやろう」
"First question. How many drops of water are there in the sea?"
「一つ目の質問じゃ。海には、水のしずくがいくつある？」
The boy said, "My king, please stop all the rivers in the world. Then no more water can go into the sea. Then I will count the drops and tell you."
男の子は言いました。「王さま、どうか世界じゅうの川をせきとめてください。そうすれば、海にはもう水が流れこみません。そうしたら、しずくを数えて、お答えいたします」
"Second question," said the king. "How many stars are there in the sky?"
「二つ目の質問じゃ」と、王さまは言いました。「空には、星がいくつある？」
"Please give me a big piece of white paper," said the boy. He took a pen and made many, many tiny dots on it. They were so small that no one could see them well. "There are as many stars in the sky as there are dots on this paper," he said. "Please count them." But no one could.
「大きな白い紙を一枚ください」と、男の子は言いました。男の子はペンを取ると、紙の上に、小さな小さな点を、数えきれないほどたくさん打ちました。点はあまりに小さくて、だれにもよく見えないほどでした。「空の星の数は、この紙の点の数と同じです」と、男の子は言いました。「どうぞ、数えてみてください」けれども、数えられる人はだれもいませんでした。
"Third question," said the king. "How many seconds are there in eternity?"
「三つ目の質問じゃ」と、王さまは言いました。「永遠には、何秒ある？」
The boy said, "Far away, there is a mountain made of diamond. It is very high, very wide, and very deep. Every hundred years, a little bird comes to the mountain and rubs its beak on it. When there is no mountain left, the first second of eternity is over."
男の子は言いました。「遠い遠いところに、ダイヤモンドでできた山があります。とても高く、とても広く、とても深い山です。百年に一度、小さな鳥がその山にやって来て、くちばしをこすりつけていきます。そうして山がすっかりなくなったとき、永遠の最初の一秒が終わるのです」
The king smiled. "You answered like a wise man," he said. "From today, you will live with me in my palace, and you will be my own son."
王さまは、にっこりしました。「おまえは、まるで賢者のように答えた」と、王さまは言いました。「今日からは、わしのお城で一緒に暮らすがよい。おまえを、わしの息子にしよう」
