A cat meets a fox in the woods. "Good morning, Mr. Fox!" says the cat. "How are you?"
猫が森で、キツネに出会いました。「おはようございます、キツネさん！」と、猫はあいさつしました。「ごきげんいかが？」
The fox looks at the cat. He does not like her. "You? You only catch mice! What can you do?"
キツネは、猫をじろりと見ました。猫のことが気に入らなかったのです。「ふん、おまえか。ネズミをとるしか能がないくせに！ おまえに何ができるっていうんだ？」
"I can do one thing," says the cat. "When dogs come, I run up a tree."
「できることは、一つだけです」と、猫は答えました。「犬が来たら、木に駆け登るんです」
"Only one?" The fox laughs. "I can do one hundred things! I have a big bag of tricks, too."
「たった一つ？」キツネは笑いました。「おれは百のことができるぞ！ そのうえ、技の詰まった大きな袋まで持っているんだ」
Then a hunter comes. He has four dogs. The cat runs up a tree. She sits at the top.
そこへ、猟師がやって来ました。犬を四匹連れていました。猫は木に駆け登って、てっぺんに座りました。
"Open your bag, Mr. Fox!" calls the cat. "Open your bag of tricks!"
「袋を開けてごらんなさいよ、キツネさん！」と、猫は呼びかけました。「技がいっぱい詰まった、その袋を！」
But the dogs are fast. They catch the fox. He cannot get away.
けれども、犬たちは足が速く、たちまちキツネをつかまえてしまいました。キツネは、もう逃げられませんでした。
"Oh, Mr. Fox," says the cat. "You have one hundred tricks. But you cannot climb a tree!"
「ああ、キツネさん」と、猫は言いました。「百の技があっても、木には登れないのね！」
