A turtle lives in a little lake. He has two friends. They are geese.
小さな湖に、一匹のカメが住んでいました。カメには、二羽の友だちがいました。ガンという鳥です。
The turtle talks and talks. From morning to night, he never stops!
カメは、しゃべって、しゃべって、しゃべってばかりいました。朝から晩まで、口を閉じたことがありませんでした！
One summer, there is no rain. The lake gets small. "Come with us," say the geese. "We know a big lake far away."
ある夏、雨がちっとも降らず、湖は小さくなってしまいました。「ぼくたちと一緒においでよ」と、ガンたちは言いました。「遠くに大きな湖があるんだ」
"But I can't fly," says the turtle.
「でも、ぼくは飛べないよ」と、カメは言いました。
"Hold this stick in your mouth," say the geese. "We will hold the ends. But do not talk!" "OK, OK, OK!" says the turtle.
「この棒を口にくわえて」と、ガンたちは言いました。「ぼくたちが両はしを持つから。でも、しゃべっちゃだめだよ！」「わかった、わかった、わかったよ！」と、カメは答えました。
Up, up they go! They fly over a field and a town.
みんなは、ぐんぐん空へ上っていきました！ 野原を越え、町を越えて飛んでいきます。
Some children look up. "Look! Two birds are carrying a turtle! How funny!"
子どもたちが空を見上げました。「見て！ 鳥がカメを運んでるよ！ へんなの！」
The turtle is angry. He wants to say, "Be quiet!" So he opens his mouth.
カメはむっとしました。「うるさい！」と言ってやりたくなったのです。そこで、口を開けてしまいました。
Oh no! Down, down, down he falls. BUMP! He hits the hard road.
たいへん！ カメは下へ、下へ、下へと落ちていきました。ドスン！ かたい道にぶつかってしまいました。
The geese look down. "Poor turtle," they say. "He could not stop talking."
ガンたちは下を見ました。「かわいそうなカメさん」と、ガンたちは言いました。「しゃべるのを、やめられなかったんだね」
