A big lion lives in the forest. He eats and eats. All the animals are afraid.
森に、大きなライオンが住んでいました。ライオンは、食べて、食べて、食べつづけました。動物たちはみんな、こわくてたまりませんでした。
The animals say, "Please! Every day, one of us will come to you. Eat only one."
動物たちは言いました。「お願いです！ 毎日、わたしたちのうち一匹が、あなたのところへ行きます。食べるのは、その一匹だけにしてください」
"OK," says the lion. "But do not be late!"
「よかろう」と、ライオンは言いました。「だが、遅れるなよ！」
One day, it is the little hare's turn. He walks very slowly. He thinks and thinks.
ある日、小さなウサギの番になりました。ウサギは、とてもゆっくり歩いていきました。そして、考えに考えました。
He comes very late. "Why are you late?" roars the lion. "I am hungry!"
ウサギは、ずいぶん遅れて着きました。「なぜ遅れた？」と、ライオンはほえました。「腹がへっているんだぞ！」
"Sorry, King Lion. I met another lion. He says he is the king of this forest!"
「ごめんなさい、ライオンの王様。途中で、別のライオンに会ったんです。そのライオンが、自分こそこの森の王様だと言うんです！」
"Another king?" roars the lion. "Show me!"
「別の王だと？」と、ライオンはほえました。「そいつのところへ案内しろ！」
The hare takes the lion to an old well. "He lives down there."
ウサギは、ライオンを古い井戸へ連れていきました。「あいつは、この下に住んでいるんです」
The lion looks in. He sees a big lion in the water! "GRRR!" he roars. "GRRR!" roars the lion in the water.
ライオンは、井戸の中をのぞきこみました。すると、水の中に大きなライオンがいるではありませんか！ 「ガオー！」とほえると、水の中のライオンも「ガオー！」とほえ返しました。
The lion is very angry. He jumps into the well. SPLASH! He never comes out.
ライオンは、かんかんに怒りました。そして、井戸に飛びこみました。ザブーン！ ライオンは、二度と上がってきませんでした。
The little hare runs home. "We are safe now!" All the animals sing and dance.
小さなウサギは、家へかけもどりました。「もう、だいじょうぶだよ！」動物たちはみんなで、歌って踊りました。
