There was once a young soldier who had fought bravely in the war, and when the war was over, he was sent away with nothing. His parents had died, and his brothers would not let him stay with them, so he had no home and no money. All he owned was his gun, and he wandered sadly out into the countryside.
He sat down under some trees in a lonely field and thought about his hard life. Suddenly he heard a noise, and when he looked up, a stranger in a green coat was standing in front of him. The stranger looked like a gentleman, but he had an ugly horse's hoof instead of one of his feet. It was the devil.
"I know what you need," said the stranger. "You can have as much money as you want, but first I must know whether you are brave." "I am a soldier," said the young man. "How could I be afraid?" "Then look behind you," said the stranger. A huge bear was coming toward them, growling. The soldier quickly raised his gun and shot it, and the bear fell to the ground.
"You are brave," said the devil. "Now here is my bargain. For seven years you must not wash yourself, comb your hair or beard, or cut your nails. You must wear my green coat, and you must use the skin of this bear as your cloak and your bed. If you die during these seven years, you will belong to me. But if you stay alive, you will be free and rich for the rest of your life."
The soldier thought about how poor he was, and he agreed. The devil gave him the green coat and said, "Whenever you put your hand into the pocket, it will be full of gold." Then he pulled the skin off the bear and disappeared. From then on, the soldier was called Bearskin.
In the first year he did not look too bad, but by the second year he looked like a monster. His hair covered almost his whole face, his beard was as thick as a mat and his nails were like claws. Anyone who saw him ran away. But he gave money to the poor wherever he went and asked them to pray that he would live through the seven years. Because he paid well, he could always find a place to sleep.
In the fourth year, he came to an inn where he heard someone crying in the next room. It was an old man who had lost everything and owed money to the innkeeper. "If I can't pay my debts," the old man said, "I will be thrown into prison." Bearskin felt sorry for him. He paid all the old man's debts and gave him a bag of gold as well.
The old man did not know how to thank him. "Come home with me," he said. "I have three beautiful daughters. Choose one of them to be your wife. When she hears what you have done for me, she will not say no."
When the oldest daughter saw Bearskin's face, she screamed and ran out of the room. The second daughter looked at him from head to foot and said, "How can I marry someone who doesn't even look human? I would rather marry the shaved bear that came to the fair last year." But the youngest daughter said, "Dear father, he must be a good man, since he helped you when you were in trouble. You have promised him a bride, and your promise must be kept."
It was a pity that Bearskin's face was covered with dirt and hair, because no one could see how happy he was when he heard these words. He took a ring from his finger, broke it in two and gave one half to her. He kept the other half for himself. "Keep this half safely," he said. "I must travel for three more years. If I come back, we will be married. If I don't come back, you are free, because I will be dead. Pray to God that I stay alive."
The poor bride dressed in black, and whenever she thought of him, tears came to her eyes. Her sisters laughed at her all the time. "Be careful when he shakes your hand," said the oldest. "He will scratch you with his claws." "Watch out," said the second. "Bears like sweet things. If he likes you, he might eat you up."
Meanwhile, Bearskin traveled from place to place, doing as much good as he could and giving money to the poor. At last the last day of the seven years came. He went back to the same field and sat down under the trees. Soon there was a rushing sound, and the devil stood in front of him, looking very cross.
"Here is your old coat," said the devil. "Now give me back my green one." "Not so fast," said the soldier. "First you must clean me up." The devil had to bring water, wash him, comb his hair and cut his nails. When it was done, the soldier looked like a brave and handsome man, even more handsome than before. Then the devil left, and the young man was free.
He went into the town, bought fine clothes and drove in a carriage pulled by four white horses to the house of his bride. Nobody recognized him. The father thought he was a great lord and brought him to his daughters. The two older sisters sat on each side of him, poured his wine and gave him the best things to eat, because they thought they had never seen a finer man. But the youngest sat across from him in her black dress and did not say a word.
At last the stranger asked the father if he would give him one of his daughters as a wife. The two older sisters jumped up and ran to their rooms to put on their best dresses, because each of them hoped to be chosen. While they were gone, the stranger took the half ring out of his pocket and dropped it into a cup of wine, which he passed across the table to the youngest daughter.
When she had drunk the wine and saw the half ring at the bottom, her heart began to beat fast. She took out the other half, which she wore on a ribbon around her neck, and put the two halves together. They fitted perfectly. "I am your Bearskin," said the young man. "Thanks to God, I have my human face again, and I am clean." He took her in his arms and kissed her.
Just then the two sisters came back in their finest dresses. When they saw that the handsome man had chosen their youngest sister and heard that he was Bearskin, they were so angry and jealous that they ran out of the house into the night, and nobody ever saw them again.
That evening there was a knock at the door. When the young man opened it, there stood the devil in his green coat. "You see," said the devil with a nasty smile, "I lost your soul, but I have found two others in its place."
