In the beautiful old city of Verona, there lived two rich and noble families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Long ago a quarrel had begun between them, and it had grown into such deadly hatred that even their servants could not pass each other in the street without fighting. The Prince of Verona had warned them many times that whoever broke the peace again would pay with his life.
Old Lord Capulet gave a great feast, and all the fair ladies and noble gentlemen of Verona were invited, all except the Montagues. Romeo, the young son of Lord Montague, was at that time in love with a cold lady named Rosaline, who did not return his love. His friend Benvolio persuaded him to go to the feast in disguise. "Compare her face with the faces of the other beauties there," he said, "and you will think your swan is a crow." So Romeo, Benvolio, and their witty friend Mercutio put on masks and went to the Capulets' house.
The moment Romeo saw a certain young lady dancing, he forgot Rosaline completely. "She teaches the torches to burn bright," he whispered. "I never saw true beauty until this night." But as he spoke, Tybalt, a hot-tempered nephew of Lord Capulet, recognized his voice. "A Montague, here!" he cried, and he wanted to strike him. Old Capulet stopped him, because Romeo was behaving like a gentleman and because he would allow no fighting at his feast. Tybalt obeyed, but he swore to take revenge.
When the dancing was done, Romeo found a chance to speak to the lady. He gently took her hand, calling it a holy shrine and himself a pilgrim who wished to kiss it. She answered with sweet wit, and soon he kissed her. Only after she was called away did he learn her name. She was Juliet, the only daughter of Lord Capulet, his family's greatest enemy. Juliet, too, asked her nurse who the young man was, and when she heard, she was filled with sorrow. "My only love has come from my only hate," she said.
That night Romeo could not bring himself to go home. He climbed the wall into the Capulets' orchard. Soon Juliet appeared at a window above, and the moon lit up her face. Believing she was alone, she sighed and spoke her thoughts aloud. "O Romeo, Romeo, why are you Romeo? Give up your name, or if you will not, only swear to love me, and I will no longer be a Capulet." Romeo could not stay silent. "Call me only your love," he said, "and I will never be Romeo again."
Juliet was startled and embarrassed that he had heard her secret. But she would not pretend to be cold, as some ladies did. She told him honestly that she loved him and asked whether he truly loved her. They promised their love by the light of the moon, and before they parted, Juliet said that if his love was honorable, she would marry him. "Tomorrow I will send someone to you," she said. "Tell them where and when we can be married." They could hardly bear to say goodbye. "Parting is such sweet sorrow," said Juliet, "that I shall say good night until it is morning."
At dawn, Romeo hurried to his friend and teacher, Friar Laurence. The good friar was surprised that Romeo had forgotten Rosaline so quickly. But he hoped that this marriage might end the long quarrel between the families. That same afternoon, Juliet came to his cell, and the friar married them in secret.
But that very day, Tybalt met Romeo's friends in the street, and soon Romeo himself. "Villain!" shouted Tybalt. Romeo, who was now secretly Tybalt's relative by marriage, refused to fight and answered him gently. Mercutio, who did not know the reason, was disgusted by this calmness. He drew his sword and fought Tybalt himself. When Romeo stepped between them to stop the fight, Tybalt struck Mercutio under Romeo's arm, and Mercutio fell, mortally wounded. "A plague on both your houses!" he cried. Romeo's patience broke. He fought Tybalt in fury, and Tybalt was killed.
The Prince came, and both families gathered, demanding justice. Because Tybalt had started the fight, the Prince did not sentence Romeo to death. Instead, he banished him from Verona forever. If Romeo was ever found in the city, he would die.
When Juliet heard the news, she wept first for her cousin, and then far more bitterly for Romeo's banishment. Romeo, hiding in Friar Laurence's cell, threw himself on the floor in despair. To him, banishment was worse than death, because it meant he could not see Juliet. The friar scolded him for his weakness. "Go to your wife tonight," he said. "Then leave for Mantua at dawn. In time I will tell the world about your marriage, and the Prince will pardon you."
Romeo spent that one night with Juliet. At dawn they heard a lark singing. Juliet tried to say that it was the nightingale, so that he would stay a little longer. But the light was growing, and Romeo had to go. As he climbed down from her window, Juliet looked at him below, and she felt that he looked pale, like a dead man at the bottom of a tomb.
Soon after, Lord Capulet told Juliet that she was to marry a noble young gentleman named Count Paris in just a few days. Juliet begged him to wait, but her father was furious. "Marry him on Thursday," he said, "or I will throw you out into the street." In despair, Juliet ran to Friar Laurence.
The friar gave her a small bottle. "Go home and agree to the marriage," he said. "On the night before the wedding, drink this. For forty-two hours you will be cold and still, as if you were dead. Your family will carry you to the Capulets' tomb. Meanwhile I will write to Romeo. He will come, and when you wake, he will take you away to Mantua." Juliet was afraid, but her love for Romeo was stronger than her fear. She took the bottle.
She went home and pretended to obey her father, who was overjoyed. That night, alone in her room, she was filled with terrible thoughts. What if the drink did not work? What if she woke too early, alone among the dead in the dark tomb? But at last she drank it and fell senseless on her bed.
In the morning, the house that had been preparing for a wedding was filled with grief. The wedding music became funeral bells, and the flowers meant for the bride were scattered over her body. Juliet was carried to the family tomb.
Bad news travels faster than good. Friar Laurence's letter was delayed and never reached Romeo. Instead, his servant brought him the news that Juliet was dead. Romeo decided at once to die beside her. He bought a deadly poison from a poor apothecary and rode to Verona in the night.
At the tomb, he found Count Paris, who had come to scatter flowers on the grave of his bride. Paris thought Romeo had come to do some harm to the dead Capulets, and he tried to arrest him. Romeo begged him to go away, but Paris would not, and they fought. Paris fell. When Romeo saw who he was, he laid him gently inside the tomb.
Then Romeo saw Juliet. She looked as beautiful as ever, with the color still in her lips and cheeks, as if death itself had fallen in love with her. He kissed her for the last time, drank the poison, and died at her side.
Moments later Friar Laurence arrived with a lantern, and Juliet awoke. "Where is my Romeo?" she asked. The friar heard voices outside and urged her to come away, but she refused. Then she saw the cup in Romeo's hand and understood everything. She kissed his lips, hoping that some poison was left on them. Hearing the watchmen coming, she took Romeo's dagger and, with it, followed him into death.
The watchmen found them, and soon the Prince, the Montagues, and the Capulets stood together in the tomb. Friar Laurence told them the whole sad story of the secret marriage. The two old fathers looked at their children, and at last they understood what their hatred had done. Lord Capulet held out his hand to Lord Montague and called him brother. Lord Montague promised to raise a statue of Juliet in pure gold, and Lord Capulet promised to raise one of Romeo beside it. So, too late, the two families buried their long hatred in the grave of their children.
