Diwali, a festival celebrated in India and many other countries, falls on November 8 this year. It is often called the festival of lights.
インドやほかの多くの国で祝われる祭り、ディワリは、今年は11月8日です。ディワリは、よく「光の祭り」とよばれます。
People put small lamps called diyas in their homes. Buildings are lit up at night. The festival lasts for five days.
人々は、ディヤとよばれる小さなランプを家にかざります。夜には建物がライトアップされます。祭りは5日間続きます。
This year is special. In December 2025, UNESCO added Diwali to its list of living traditions from around the world. Yoga is also on the list. So this will be the first Diwali since the festival joined the list.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, falls on Sunday, November 8, this year, according to India's official holiday list. It will be the first Diwali since UNESCO added the festival to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
インドの政府の祝日の一覧によると、ヒンドゥー教の光の祭りディワリは、今年は11月8日（日）です。ユネスコがこの祭りを「人類の無形文化遺産の代表的な一覧表」に加えてから、初めてのディワリになります。
The decision was announced on December 10, 2025, at a UNESCO committee meeting held at the Red Fort in Delhi. India had sent its nomination in 2023. Diwali became the 16th item from India on the list, which already included yoga, the Kumbh Mela gathering and the Garba dance of Gujarat.

During the festival, families decorate their homes with small lamps called diyas, and buildings are lit up at night. The festival goes on for five days. Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists mark Diwali as well, and people in many countries outside India now celebrate it too.

Some Indian states celebrate a day early. India's holiday list says national government offices in those states may close on that earlier day instead, if the state government does the same.

The festival is also gaining official recognition outside India. In October 2025, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that made Diwali a state holiday from January 1, 2026. It lets public schools and community colleges shut for the day, and state workers can choose to stay home from work that day. Students in public schools who stay home to celebrate Diwali will be excused.
