Japan started a new government agency for disasters on Monday. It is called the National Disaster Management Agency.

The prime minister leads the agency. Goshi Hosono is set to become its first minister. At the start, the agency can have up to 352 workers.

The agency will prepare for very large disasters, such as a big earthquake in the Tokyo area. It will work before a disaster happens and also help people after one.

Hosono said that on the agency's first day, he would ask everyone in Japan to get ready. He wants families to keep food, water and portable toilets at home. He asked for enough supplies for at least three days, and a week if possible.

Some people on social media were worried about the request. But Hosono wrote on X that the request was not based on any earthquake forecast. He said the goal is to prepare before disasters happen.
