"The dreamers are the saviours of the world." So begins the sixth chapter of James Allen's As a Man Thinketh. He believed that the visible world is held up by the invisible world of dreams. Through all its troubles and hard work, he said, humanity is fed by the beautiful visions of its lonely dreamers.
Who are these dreamers? Allen names composers, sculptors, painters, poets, prophets and wise teachers. They are the builders of the future. The world is beautiful because they have lived. Without them, he said, the hard-working people of the world would lose hope.
Allen gives famous examples. Columbus held in his heart the vision of another world, and he found it. Copernicus imagined a much larger universe with many worlds, and he showed it to us. The Buddha saw a vision of a spiritual world of perfect peace, and he entered it. Each of them first saw something in the mind that others could not yet see.
So Allen tells his readers: cherish your visions. Cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that moves in your heart and the beauty that forms in your mind. Out of them, he says, will grow all the happy conditions of your life, and if you remain true to them, your world will at last be built.
"Dream lofty dreams," he writes, "and as you dream, so shall you become." Your vision is the promise of what you will one day be. The greatest achievement, he says, was at first, and for a time, only a dream. The oak tree sleeps inside the acorn. The bird waits inside the egg. Dreams are the seeds of realities.
Allen also says that our present situation does not have to stop us. Your circumstances may be unpleasant, he writes, but they will not stay that way for long if you see an ideal and work toward it. You cannot travel forward inside your mind and stand still outside. When the inner person changes, the outer life must change too.
But Allen is not talking about lazy wishing. He makes this very clear with a story. A young man is poor and works long hours in an unhealthy workshop. He has no school education and no fine manners. But he dreams of better things. He thinks of knowledge, of beauty, of a richer kind of life. The vision fills his mind, and it makes him restless. So he uses all his spare time and all his small savings to develop the abilities hidden inside him.
Soon his mind has changed so much that the workshop can no longer hold him. It no longer fits his life, and it falls away like an old coat he has thrown off. New opportunities that fit his growing powers appear, and he leaves the workshop forever. Years later, we see him as a grown man. He has become a powerful speaker and leader whose words change many people's lives. He has realized the vision of his youth.
Allen then speaks directly to young readers. You too, he says, will realize the vision of your heart, whether it is noble or low, because you will always move toward what you secretly love most. You will become as small as your strongest selfish desire, or as great as your highest dream. He quotes another writer who describes it this way: you may be keeping accounts in an office, and one day you will walk out through the door that seemed to block your dreams and find yourself speaking before an audience, the pen still behind your ear and ink still on your fingers.
Next comes one of the most powerful passages in the book. Careless and lazy people, Allen says, see only the results of things. When a person becomes rich, they say, "How lucky he is!" When someone becomes wise, they say, "How gifted she is!" When someone gains great influence, they say, "Chance helps him at every turn." They do not see the trials, failures and struggles these people went through. They do not know about the sacrifices, the tireless efforts, or the faith that was needed. They do not see the darkness and the heartache. They see only the light and the joy, and they call it luck.
In all human life, Allen says, there are efforts and there are results, and the strength of the effort is the measure of the result. In this sense, chance does not exist. Skills, knowledge and success are the fruits of effort. They are thoughts completed and visions made real.
This message is especially encouraging for young people. You may not like your present school, town or job. You may feel that you have fewer chances than others. Allen would not tell you to ignore these problems. He would tell you to hold on to a clear picture of the life you want, and to give it a little of your time and energy every single day. Over months and years, he believed, that picture will pull your whole life toward it.
Try this today. Take a sheet of paper and write a short description of the person you hope to be in ten years. Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you helping? Then write one small thing you can do this week that this future person would be proud of. A vision without effort is only a wish. A vision with daily effort, Allen believed, is the beginning of a new life.
