Long ago, a wicked troll made a magic mirror. Everything good and beautiful that was reflected in it shrank to almost nothing, and everything bad and ugly looked even bigger and worse. One day the troll's pupils carried the mirror up toward the sky, but it shook so much that it fell and broke into millions of pieces. Some of the pieces were as small as grains of sand, and they flew all over the world. If one got into a person's eye, that person saw only what was bad in everything. If one went into a person's heart, the heart became as cold as a lump of ice.
In a big city lived two poor children, a boy named Kay and a girl named Gerda. They were not brother and sister, but they loved each other as if they were. Their families lived in attic rooms next to each other, and between the two windows the parents had placed wooden boxes where roses grew. In summer the children sat under the roses and played, and in winter they warmed coins on the stove and pressed them against the frozen windows to make little peepholes.
One winter evening, when Kay was looking out at the snow, one snowflake grew bigger and bigger until it became a lady dressed in white, made of millions of sparkling snowflakes. She was beautiful, but she was made of ice, shining, glittering ice, and yet she was alive. Her eyes shone like two bright stars, but there was no peace or rest in them. She nodded to Kay and waved her hand. Kay was frightened and jumped down from his chair.
The next summer, as Kay and Gerda were looking at a picture book among the roses, Kay suddenly cried, "Oh! Something hit my heart! And now something is in my eye!" Gerda looked, but she could see nothing.
"I think it's gone," said Kay. But it was not gone. It was one of those tiny pieces of glass from the troll's mirror. Poor Kay had one in his eye, and another had gone right into his heart, which would soon turn into ice.
"Why are you crying?" he said to Gerda. "You look so ugly when you cry! There's nothing wrong with me. And look, that rose has a worm in it. These roses are ugly!"
He kicked the boxes and pulled off the roses. From that day on, he laughed at Gerda and at everything they used to love.
One winter day, Kay took his sled to the big square. A large white sleigh came by, and someone in it was wrapped in a white fur coat and hat. Kay tied his little sled to it and rode along. The sleigh went faster and faster, out of the city gate, and the snow fell so thickly that Kay could not see his own hand.
Then the sleigh stopped, and the driver stood up. It was the Snow Queen. "Are you cold?" she asked, and she kissed him on the forehead. The kiss was colder than ice and went straight to his heart. She kissed him once more, and then he forgot Gerda and everyone at home.
No one knew where Kay had gone. Many people said he must have drowned in the river. Gerda cried for a long time. But when spring came, she put on her new red shoes and went down to the river.
"Did you take my friend Kay?" she asked. "I'll give you my red shoes if you give him back to me." She threw her shoes into the river, but the waves brought them back. So she climbed into a little boat to throw them farther, and the boat floated away down the river.
The boat carried her to a cottage with a wonderful garden, where a lonely old woman who knew some magic lived. She combed Gerda's hair with a golden comb, and Gerda began to forget about Kay. The old woman also made all the roses sink into the ground. But one day Gerda saw a rose painted on the old woman's hat, and she remembered everything.
She cried, and where her warm tears fell, a rose bush grew up from the ground. "Oh, how long I have stayed here!" she said. "I must find Kay!" And she ran out of the garden. It was already autumn.
Her feet were sore and tired when a crow hopped across the snow toward her. "Maybe I have seen your Kay," said the crow. "A clever princess in this kingdom has just married a boy with bright eyes who talks very well." "That's Kay!" cried Gerda. The crow led her secretly into the castle at night. But when she held up her lamp to the sleeping young man, she saw that it was not Kay.
The prince and princess were very kind when they heard her story. They gave her warm boots, a muff and a golden coach to continue her journey. But in a dark forest, robbers stopped the coach. A wild robber girl took Gerda's muff and made Gerda sleep beside her, among her pigeons and a reindeer that was tied up. Gerda told her about Kay.
Then the wood pigeons cooed, "We have seen little Kay. He was sitting in the Snow Queen's sleigh. She was going to Lapland, where there is always snow and ice." "Ask the reindeer," said the robber girl. The reindeer's eyes shone. "Lapland is my home," he said.
"The Snow Queen has her summer tent there, but her castle is near the North Pole."
The next morning the robber girl untied the reindeer. "Go," she said, "and take this little girl to the Snow Queen's castle to find her friend." She gave Gerda back her boots, but kept the muff. Away they went, over bushes and through the great forests, over marshes and plains, until the northern lights flashed across the sky.
At last they came to the house of a wise Finnish woman. "Can't you give this little girl the strength of twelve men," asked the reindeer, "so that she can defeat the Snow Queen?" "I cannot give her more power than she has already," said the wise woman. "Don't you see how people and animals help her, and how she has come so far on her own two feet? Her power is in her heart, because she is a sweet and innocent child."
The reindeer carried Gerda to the edge of the Snow Queen's garden and left her there. Huge, living snowflakes rushed toward her like an army, but Gerda said her prayers, and her warm breath became little angels who drove the snowflakes away. Then she walked bravely into the palace.
The walls of the palace were made of drifting snow, and the windows and doors were made of cutting winds. There were more than a hundred halls, lit by the northern lights, and all of them were empty, enormous and icy cold. In the middle of the biggest hall lay a frozen lake, broken into a thousand pieces.
Little Kay was blue with cold, almost black, but he did not feel it, because the Snow Queen had kissed away his shivers, and his heart was nothing but a lump of ice. He was pulling some sharp, flat pieces of ice this way and that, trying to make them into a word. But he could never make the word he wanted, the word "eternity." The Snow Queen had said, "If you can make that word, you will be your own master, and I will give you the whole world and a new pair of skates." Now she had flown away to the warm countries, and Kay sat alone in the great empty hall.
Gerda saw him at once. She ran to him, threw her arms around his neck and cried, "Kay! Dear little Kay! I've found you at last!" But he sat still, stiff and cold. Then Gerda cried hot tears, and they fell on his chest and went into his heart.
They melted the lump of ice and washed away the little piece of mirror. He looked at her, and she sang a song about the roses they used to grow together. Then Kay burst into tears, and he cried so hard that the splinter of glass was washed out of his eye. He knew her at once.
"Gerda! Dear little Gerda! Where have you been so long? And where have I been?" He looked around.
"How cold it is here! How empty and huge!"
He held on to Gerda, and she laughed and cried with joy. Even the pieces of ice danced around them, and when they were tired, they lay down and formed the very word the Snow Queen had asked him to make. Gerda kissed his cheeks, and they became rosy.
She kissed his eyes, and they shone like hers. She kissed his hands and feet, and he was well and strong again. Now the Snow Queen could come home if she liked. His freedom was written there in shining pieces of ice.
They took each other's hands and walked out of the great palace. The reindeer was waiting for them, and he carried them back across the snow, and they said goodbye to the wise woman, the robber girl and their other friends. As they traveled, spring came, with green leaves and flowers, and they heard the church bells of their own city.
They climbed the stairs to their grandmother's room, where everything was just as before. But as they went through the door, they realized that they had grown up. The roses in the boxes were blooming at the open window, and there stood their own little chairs. Kay and Gerda sat down on them, holding each other's hands. They had forgotten the cold, empty splendor of the Snow Queen's palace like a bad dream. There they sat, grown up and yet children at heart, and it was summer, warm, beautiful summer.
