A miller died and left his three sons all he had: a mill, a donkey and a cat. The oldest son took the mill, the second took the donkey, and the youngest got only the cat.
"My brothers can work together and make a good living," said the youngest son sadly. "But what can I do with a cat? I'll soon be hungry."
The cat heard this and said in a serious voice, "Don't worry, master. Just give me a bag and a pair of boots, so that I can walk through the bushes. You'll see that I'm worth more than you think."
The young man was surprised to hear a cat speak, but he did as the cat asked. The cat pulled on the boots, put the bag around his neck and went to a field where there were many rabbits. He put some grain in the bag, lay down as if he were asleep and waited. Soon a young rabbit hopped into the bag, and the cat pulled the strings tight.
Proud of his catch, Puss went to the palace and asked to see the king. He bowed low and said, "Your Majesty, here is a fine rabbit from my master, the Marquis of Carabas." That was the name Puss had made up for his master. "Tell your master that I thank him," said the king, "and that I am very pleased."
For two or three months Puss brought presents to the king from his master. One day he heard that the king and his beautiful daughter were going to drive along the river. "Master," said Puss, "do what I tell you, and your fortune is made. Go and swim in the river at the place I show you, and leave the rest to me."
The miller's son did as he was told. While he was swimming, the king's carriage came by, and Puss began to shout, "Help! Help! My master, the Marquis of Carabas, is drowning!" The king looked out and saw the cat who had brought him so many presents. He ordered his guards to go and help the Marquis.
While they were pulling the young man out of the river, Puss told the king that robbers had stolen his master's clothes. In fact, the clever cat had hidden them under a big stone himself. The king ordered his servants to bring one of his finest suits for the Marquis. In these fine clothes the young man looked very handsome, and the princess liked him at once. The king invited him to ride in the carriage with them.
Puss ran on ahead. He came to some farmers cutting grass in a field. "Good people," he said, "when the king comes and asks whose fields these are, you must say they belong to the Marquis of Carabas. If you don't, you'll be in very big trouble!"
When the king passed by and asked whose fields they were, the farmers all answered, "They belong to the Marquis of Carabas." They were afraid of the cat. Puss ran ahead and said the same thing to everyone he met, and the king was amazed at how much land the Marquis owned.
At last Puss came to a great castle. It belonged to an ogre, the richest ogre ever known, because all the land the king had passed through was really his. Puss asked to see him and said politely, "I have heard that you can change yourself into any animal you like, for example a lion or an elephant." "That's true," said the ogre, "and I'll show you." And he turned himself into a lion.
Puss was so frightened that he jumped up onto the roof, which was not easy in his boots. When the ogre became himself again, Puss came down and said, "I was very scared! But I've also heard that you can change into the smallest animal, like a mouse. Surely that's impossible."
"Impossible?" said the ogre. "Watch this!" And he turned into a little mouse and ran across the floor. At once Puss jumped on it, and that was the end of the ogre.
Just then the king's carriage arrived at the castle. Puss ran out to meet it. "Welcome, Your Majesty, to the castle of my lord, the Marquis of Carabas!" "What, Marquis!" said the king. "This castle is yours, too?" They went into the great hall, where a wonderful dinner was waiting.
The king was charmed by the young man's good manners and great wealth, and the princess was deeply in love with him. "Marquis," said the king, "if you wish, you can become my son-in-law." The Marquis bowed low and said yes, and that very day he married the princess.
Puss became a great lord and never chased mice again, except for fun.
