There once was a prince who wanted to marry a princess. But she had to be a real princess. He traveled all over the world to find one. He met many princesses, but something was always wrong. He could never be sure they were real. So he came home again, very sad.
むかし、お姫さまと結婚したいと思っている王子さまがいました。けれども、相手は本物のお姫さまでなければなりませんでした。王子さまは本物のお姫さまをさがして、世界じゅうを旅しました。たくさんのお姫さまに会いましたが、いつもどこかがおかしいのです。本物かどうか、どうしても確かめられませんでした。それで王子さまは、すっかりしょんぼりして国に帰ってきました。
One evening there was a terrible storm. The rain came down, and the thunder roared. Suddenly someone knocked at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.
ある晩、ひどい嵐になりました。雨がざあざあ降り、雷がゴロゴロと鳴りひびきました。とつぜん、だれかが町の門をたたいたので、年とった王さまが門を開けに行きました。
A princess was standing outside. But what a sight! Water ran down from her hair and her clothes, into her shoes and out again. Still, she said that she was a real princess.
外には、お姫さまがひとり立っていました。でも、なんというありさまでしょう！ 髪の毛からも服からも水がしたたり落ち、くつの中に流れこんでは、また外にあふれ出ていました。それでも、そのお姫さまは、自分は本物のお姫さまだと言うのでした。
"Well, we'll soon find out," thought the old queen. She said nothing, but she went into the bedroom. She took everything off the bed and put one little pea on the bottom of the bed. Then she put twenty mattresses on top of the pea, and twenty soft feather beds on top of the mattresses. The princess had to sleep on top of it all.
「まあ、すぐにわかることですよ」と、年とったお妃さまは思いました。お妃さまは何も言わずに寝室へ行きました。そしてベッドから何もかも取り払い、いちばん下に小さなえんどう豆を一粒置きました。それから、その豆の上に敷きぶとんを二十枚重ね、さらにその上に、やわらかい羽ぶとんを二十枚重ねました。お姫さまは、そのいちばん上で寝ることになりました。
In the morning, they asked her, "How did you sleep?"
朝になると、みんなはお姫さまにたずねました。「よくおやすみになれましたか？」
"Oh, terribly!" she said. "I could not close my eyes all night. There was something hard in the bed. Now I'm black and blue all over!"
「ああ、ひどいものでしたわ！」と、お姫さまは答えました。「ひと晩じゅう、少しも目を閉じられませんでした。ベッドの中に何かかたいものがあったのです。おかげで、体じゅうあざだらけですわ！」
Then they knew she was a real princess. She felt the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds! Only a real princess could feel that.
それで、みんなはこの人が本物のお姫さまだとわかりました。二十枚の敷きぶとんと二十枚の羽ぶとんごしに、えんどう豆を感じたのですから！ そんなことを感じられるのは、本物のお姫さまだけです。
So the prince married her. And the pea went into a museum. You can still see it there, if no one has taken it. This is a true story!
こうして王子さまは、このお姫さまと結婚しました。そして、えんどう豆は博物館に納められました。だれかが持っていってしまっていなければ、今でもそこで見られますよ。これは本当にあったお話なのです！
