The magpie is very good at making nests. "Please show us how!" say the birds.
カササギは、巣作りの名人でした。「どうか、作り方を教えてください！」と、鳥たちがたのみました。
First, she makes a round cake of mud. "Oh, I see!" says the thrush. And away it flies.
カササギは、まず、どろで丸いケーキのような形を作りました。「なるほど、わかった！」とツグミは言いました。そして、パタパタと飛んでいってしまいました。
Then she puts sticks on the mud. "Now I know!" says the blackbird. And away it flies.
次に、どろの上に小枝をのせました。「もうわかったよ！」とクロウタドリは言いました。そして、パタパタと飛んでいってしまいました。
She puts more mud on the sticks. "Easy!" says the owl. And away it flies.
その小枝の上に、またどろをぬりました。「かんたん、かんたん！」とフクロウは言いました。そして、パタパタと飛んでいってしまいました。
She puts more sticks around it. "That is it!" says the sparrow. And away it flies.
そのまわりに、また小枝を組みました。「これで決まりだ！」とスズメは言いました。そして、パタパタと飛んでいってしまいました。
Now only the dove is there. It does not watch. It sings, "Take two, take two-o-o!"
とうとう、残ったのはキジバトだけになりました。キジバトは、ちっとも見ていません。「二本だよ、にほーん！」と歌っているだけです。
The magpie puts a stick on. "One is enough," she says. "Take two, take two-o-o!" "One is enough, I say!"
カササギは、巣に小枝を一本のせました。「一本で十分よ」とカササギは言いました。「二本だよ、にほーん！」「一本で十分だって言ってるでしょ！」
At last she looks up. Only the silly dove is there! The magpie is angry and flies away.
とうとう、カササギは顔を上げました。そこには、おばかなキジバトしかいません！ カササギはすっかり腹を立てて、飛んでいってしまいました。
She never shows the birds how to make a nest again. So every bird makes a different nest.
それからというもの、カササギは二度と巣の作り方を教えませんでした。だから、鳥はそれぞれ、ちがう巣を作るのです。
