Once there was a gentleman who married for the second time. His new wife was the proudest and most unpleasant woman anyone had ever seen. She had two daughters who were exactly like her in every way. The gentleman also had a young daughter of his own, who was gentle and kind, like her own mother, who had been the best woman in the world.
As soon as the wedding was over, the stepmother began to show her true character. She could not stand the girl's good qualities, because they made her own daughters look even worse. She gave the girl the hardest work in the house. The girl washed the dishes, cleaned the stairs and scrubbed the floors of her stepmother's and stepsisters' rooms. They slept in fine rooms with soft beds and tall mirrors, but she slept at the top of the house on a poor straw bed.
The poor girl suffered patiently. She did not dare to complain to her father, because his new wife controlled him completely. When her work was done, she used to sit in the corner by the fireplace among the cinders and ashes, so the family called her Cinderwench. But the younger sister, who was a little less rude than the older one, called her Cinderella. Even in her old clothes, Cinderella was a hundred times more beautiful than her sisters in their rich dresses.
One day the king's son decided to give a ball and invited all the fashionable people in the land. The two sisters were invited, too, and they were delighted. They spent days choosing their dresses and arranging their hair. They called Cinderella to ask her advice, because she had excellent taste. She helped them as well as she could, and even offered to do their hair.
While she was doing it, they said, "Cinderella, wouldn't you like to go to the ball?" "Oh, you're laughing at me," she said. "That's no place for someone like me." "You're right," they said. "People would laugh to see a Cinderwench at a ball."
At last the happy day came. The sisters went off to the palace, and Cinderella watched them as long as she could. When they were out of sight, she began to cry.
Then her fairy godmother appeared. "What's the matter, my dear?" "I wish... I wish I could..."
She was crying so hard that she couldn't finish. "You wish you could go to the ball, don't you?" said the godmother. "Yes," said Cinderella with a deep sigh. "Well," said her godmother, "be a good girl, and I'll see that you go."
"Go into the garden and bring me a pumpkin," she said. Cinderella brought the finest pumpkin she could find, though she could not imagine how it would help her. The godmother scooped out the inside and touched it with her magic wand. At once the pumpkin turned into a beautiful golden coach.
Then she looked in the mousetrap, where she found six live mice. She told Cinderella to open the little door, and as each mouse ran out, she touched it with her wand. Each mouse became a fine horse, and together they made a splendid team of six beautiful gray horses. "Now, what can we use for a coachman?"
"I'll see if there's a rat in the rat trap," said Cinderella. There was, and the godmother turned the fat rat into a fat, cheerful coachman with a magnificent beard. "Now go into the garden," said the godmother, "and you'll find six lizards behind the watering can." Cinderella brought them, and the godmother turned them into six footmen, who jumped up behind the coach in their fine uniforms as if they had done it all their lives.
"Well," said the fairy, "now you can go to the ball. Aren't you pleased?" "Yes," said Cinderella, "but must I go in these dirty old clothes?" The godmother simply touched her with the wand, and at that moment her rags became a dress of gold and silver, covered with jewels. Then she gave her a pair of glass slippers, the prettiest in the world.
"But remember," said the godmother, "you must leave the ball before midnight. If you stay one moment longer, your coach will become a pumpkin again, your horses mice, your coachman a rat, your footmen lizards, and your dress your old clothes." Cinderella promised, and she drove away, full of joy.
When the king's son was told that a great princess whom nobody knew had arrived, he ran out to welcome her. He gave her his hand and led her into the hall. Suddenly everyone was silent.
The dancing stopped, and the violins stopped playing, because everyone was looking at the beauty of the unknown lady. "How beautiful she is!" they whispered. Even the old king could not stop looking at her. All the ladies studied her dress carefully, so that they could have one made just like it the next day, if they could find such fine cloth and a clever enough dressmaker.
The prince gave her the best seat and then asked her to dance. She danced so gracefully that everyone admired her even more. A delicious supper was served, but the young prince could not eat a bite, because he could not take his eyes off her. Cinderella went and sat beside her sisters and was very polite to them, sharing the oranges and lemons the prince had given her. They were very surprised, because they did not recognize her at all.
While they were talking, Cinderella heard the clock strike a quarter to twelve. She curtsied to everyone and left as quickly as she could. At home, she thanked her godmother and told her that the prince had asked her to come to the ball again the next day.
The next evening the sisters went to the ball, and so did Cinderella, dressed even more beautifully than before. The prince stayed by her side all evening and said many sweet things to her. She was enjoying herself so much that she forgot her godmother's warning.
Suddenly she heard the clock begin to strike twelve. She jumped up and ran out of the hall as fast as a deer. The prince ran after her, but he could not catch her. On the stairs she lost one of her glass slippers, and the prince picked it up very carefully.
Cinderella reached home out of breath, without her coach or her footmen, in her old clothes. Nothing was left of her fine things except the other glass slipper. The guards at the palace gate were asked if they had seen a princess leave. They said they had seen no one except a poorly dressed girl who looked more like a peasant than a lady.
When the sisters came home, Cinderella asked them if they had enjoyed themselves and if the beautiful lady had been there. They said yes, but that she had run away at midnight so quickly that she had dropped one of her lovely glass slippers. The prince had picked it up and looked at it for the rest of the evening. Clearly, they said, he was deeply in love with the beautiful lady.
They were right. A few days later, the prince announced that he would marry the woman whose foot fit the slipper exactly. His servants began by trying it on the princesses, then the duchesses and then all the ladies of the court, but it was no use. At last they brought it to the two sisters, who did everything they could to push their feet into it, but they could not.
Cinderella was watching, and she recognized her slipper. "Let me see if it fits me," she said with a smile. Her sisters burst out laughing. But the gentleman who was trying the slipper looked at Cinderella carefully and saw that she was very beautiful. "My orders are to try it on every young woman," he said. He asked her to sit down, and when he put the slipper on her little foot, it slid on easily and fit as perfectly as if it had been made of wax.
The sisters were astonished, but they were even more astonished when Cinderella took the other slipper out of her pocket and put it on. Just then her godmother appeared and touched Cinderella's clothes with her wand, and they became even more magnificent than all her other dresses.
Now the sisters recognized her as the beautiful lady they had seen at the ball. They threw themselves at her feet and begged her to forgive them for all the unkind things they had done. Cinderella lifted them up, kissed them and said that she forgave them with all her heart, and she asked them to love her always.
She was taken to the young prince, dressed as she was. He thought she was more beautiful than ever, and a few days later they were married. Cinderella, who was as good as she was beautiful, gave her two sisters rooms in the palace, and on the same day she married them to two great lords of the court.
