For many young people today, social media is a normal part of life. They share photos, watch short videos, chat with friends, and follow news and trends on their phones every day. Social media can be fun and useful, but in recent years, many people have started asking an important question: is it harming young people's mental health?
Social media has clear benefits. It helps people stay in touch with friends and family who live far away. Young people who feel different or alone in their own town can find others with the same interests or experiences online. Many people learn new skills from videos, and social media has helped people raise money for good causes and spread important information quickly during disasters.
However, doctors and researchers have raised concerns. In many countries, the rates of anxiety and depression among teenagers have risen since the early 2010s, around the time when smartphones became common. Some researchers believe that social media is a major cause. Others say that the evidence is not clear, and that other factors, such as pressure at school and worries about money, also play a role.
There are several reasons why social media may be harmful. One is comparison. On social media, people usually post their best moments, such as beautiful meals, exciting trips, and perfect photos of themselves, which are often edited with filters. When young people compare their ordinary lives with these perfect images, they may feel that they are not good enough. This can especially hurt the way they feel about their own bodies.
Another reason is that many apps are designed to keep users watching for as long as possible. Endless scrolling, videos that play automatically, and notifications all pull us back to the screen. "Likes" and comments give a small feeling of pleasure, which makes us want to check again and again. As a result, many people spend more time on social media than they plan to, and they lose time for sleep, study, and exercise.
Sleep is a special concern. Many teenagers keep their phones beside their beds and check them late at night, and some even wake up to answer messages. Lack of sleep is closely linked to low mood and poor concentration. For this reason, some researchers believe that part of the harm from social media comes from lost sleep, rather than from the content itself.
Another concern is the kind of information young people see. Social media apps show each user posts chosen by algorithms, which are designed to match what the user has liked before. This can be convenient, but it can also trap users in a bubble of similar opinions, or show them more and more extreme content, such as unhealthy dieting tips. False information can also spread faster than the truth, because surprising posts get more attention.
Cyberbullying is also a serious problem. In the past, a student who was bullied at school could escape at home. Now, cruel messages can follow them anywhere, at any time. Hurtful comments posted online can spread to many people and be hard to delete. In the worst cases, online attacks have caused deep and lasting pain.
In Japan, too, many teenagers use social media every day, and the problem of online abuse has become widely known. In 2022, Japan made the punishment for insulting people heavier, because of growing concern about attacks on social media. Many schools now teach students to think before they post and to respect other people's privacy.
Some governments have taken stronger action. In 2023, the top health official in the United States warned that social media can be risky for young people's mental health. In late 2025, Australia began requiring social media companies to stop children under 16 from having accounts. Some other countries have been considering or introducing similar rules.
Social media companies say that they are trying to make their services safer. Some have introduced special accounts for teenagers, with stricter privacy settings, limits on who can send them messages, and reminders to take a break. Critics, however, say that these steps are not enough, because the companies earn more money when users stay on their apps longer.
However, not everyone agrees with strict bans. Critics say that it is hard to check users' ages without collecting even more personal information. They also worry that young people will simply find other ways to use social media, perhaps in less safe places. And for some young people, especially those who are isolated, online communities can be an important source of support.
Many experts suggest that the key is not only how much time we spend on social media, but how we use it. Actively chatting with close friends may make us feel better, while passively scrolling through strangers' posts may make us feel worse. Users can turn off notifications, set time limits, and unfollow accounts that make them feel bad.
It also helps to remember that what we see online is not the whole picture. Behind every perfect photo, there is a real person with ordinary days and worries, just like us. Taking breaks from social media, spending time outside, and talking with people face to face can help protect our mental health.
What do you think? Some people say that there should be strict age limits for social media, because it can seriously harm young people's mental health. Others say that education is better than bans, because social media has many benefits, and young people need to learn how to use it wisely.
