When you hear the words "artificial intelligence," or AI, you may imagine robots from science fiction movies. But AI is not only something for the future. It is already part of our everyday lives, often in ways that we do not notice. If you have used a smartphone today, you have probably used AI several times already.
Simply put, AI is technology that allows computers to do things that normally need human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing pictures, and making decisions. Most modern AI learns from huge amounts of data. For example, by looking at millions of photos of cats, an AI system can learn to recognize a cat in a new photo, even though no one has told it exactly what a cat looks like.
Let's look at a typical day. In the morning, your phone may unlock when it recognizes your face. A map app suggests the fastest way to school by predicting traffic. When you watch videos or listen to music, AI recommends what you might like next, based on what you have chosen before. Your email service uses AI to send unwanted advertising messages to a separate folder.
Since the end of 2022, a new type of AI called generative AI has spread very quickly. Generative AI chatbots can answer questions, write essays and emails, translate text into other languages, and even write computer programs in a few seconds. Other kinds of generative AI can create pictures, music, and videos from short instructions. Many students and workers now use these tools every day.
AI is also helping in more serious areas. In hospitals, AI can look at X-rays and other medical images and point out signs of disease that doctors might miss. In farming, machines and drones controlled by AI can check the health of crops and use water and fertilizer more carefully. In Japan, where many industries do not have enough workers, AI and robots are expected to help in places like nursing homes, convenience stores, and warehouses.
Cars are another example. Many new cars have AI systems that can brake automatically if they sense danger, or keep the car in its lane on the highway. In some cities in the United States and China, taxis without human drivers are already carrying passengers. In Japan, self-driving buses have been tested in some rural areas, where bus drivers are hard to find.
AI is also changing how we communicate across languages. Translation apps can now turn spoken Japanese into English almost instantly, and some earphones can translate a conversation as it happens. This is useful for tourists, for workers at hospitals and city offices, and for the growing number of people from abroad who live in Japan. Some people even wonder whether learning foreign languages will still be necessary in the future, although many teachers point out that real communication involves much more than changing words from one language into another.
However, AI also brings problems. One is accuracy. Generative AI sometimes gives answers that sound confident but are simply wrong. This is often called "hallucination." If people believe these answers without checking them, they may spread false information. AI can also be used on purpose to make fake videos and voices, called deepfakes, which can be used to trick people.
Another problem is bias. Because AI learns from data made by humans, it can learn human unfairness, too. For example, imagine an AI system that helps a company choose new workers. If it learns from past data in which mostly men were hired, it may unfairly give lower scores to women.
Privacy is a concern as well. AI systems need a lot of data, and some of it is personal information, such as our faces, voices, locations, and shopping habits. People worry about how companies and governments collect and use this information. Questions about copyright have also appeared, because generative AI learns from huge numbers of books, articles, and pictures made by people who were never asked for permission.
In education, AI raises especially difficult questions. Some teachers worry that students will let AI write their homework and stop thinking for themselves. Others believe that AI can be a patient personal tutor that explains difficult points again and again. Japan's Ministry of Education has made guidelines that allow schools to use generative AI in limited ways, while warning about its risks.
Because of these problems, many countries are making rules for AI. The European Union passed a law called the AI Act in 2024, which sets strict rules for AI used in risky areas. Japan passed its own AI law in 2025, which aims to promote the development of AI while dealing with its risks. Many experts say that rules must balance two goals: protecting people and allowing new technology to grow.
In the end, AI is a tool. Like a knife or a car, it can be used well or badly. The important thing is that people understand how it works, check its answers, and decide carefully when to use it and when not to use it.
What do you think? Some people say that AI makes our lives safer, easier, and more efficient, so we should use it as much as possible. Others say that we should be careful about using AI, because it can make mistakes, invade our privacy, and make people stop thinking for themselves.
