Long ago, in a great city of China, there lived a poor tailor's widow and her son, Aladdin. Aladdin was a lazy boy. He did not want to learn his father's trade or any other. He spent all day playing in the streets with other boys, and his mother worked hard spinning cotton to buy their bread.
One day, while Aladdin was playing, a stranger stopped and watched him. The man wore rich clothes and had a long, dark face. He was really a magician from Africa, but he smiled warmly. "Are you the son of Mustafa the tailor?" he asked.
"Yes," said Aladdin, "but my father died long ago."
The stranger began to cry and threw his arms around the boy. "My poor brother!" he said. "I am your uncle. I have traveled for many years, and I have come home too late." He gave Aladdin some gold coins for his mother, and the next day he bought the boy fine new clothes. Aladdin's mother had never heard of this uncle, but she was happy to see such a generous man.
A few days later, the "uncle" took Aladdin on a long walk outside the city, far into the mountains. At last they came to a narrow valley. The magician made a fire and threw some powder into it. Smoke rose, the ground shook, and the earth opened. There, under their feet, was a flat stone with a ring of brass in its center.
"Under this stone," said the magician, "there is a treasure that is meant for you. But you must do exactly as I say." The truth was that the magician could not enter the cave himself. By his magic arts, he had learned that only this boy could go in.
Aladdin lifted the stone. Steps led down into the darkness. "Go down," said the magician. "You will pass through three great halls full of gold. Do not touch anything, or you will die at once. Then you will come to a garden. On a wall at the end, you will find an old lamp. Bring it to me. On your way back, you may pick whatever you like from the trees." He took a ring off his own finger and put it on Aladdin's. "This will protect you," he said.
Aladdin went down. He walked carefully through the three halls, past huge jars of gold, and came into a wonderful garden. The fruits on the trees were not fruits at all. They were jewels: red rubies, green emeralds, white diamonds, and shining pearls. He found the old lamp on the wall and put it inside his shirt. Then he filled his pockets with the colorful stones, thinking they were only pretty glass.
When he came back to the bottom of the steps, the magician was waiting at the top. "Quick, give me the lamp!" he said.
"Help me up first," said Aladdin, "and then I will give it to you." But the magician wanted the lamp before the boy came out. "Give it to me now!" he shouted. Aladdin refused. The magician fell into a terrible rage. He threw more powder into the fire, said two magic words, and the stone slid back into place. Aladdin was trapped in the dark.
For two days, Aladdin sat in the cave, cold and hungry and crying. At last, he put his hands together to pray, and as he did so, he rubbed the ring on his finger. At once, a huge genie rose up in front of him. "I am the slave of the ring," it said in a voice like thunder. "What do you wish?"
Aladdin was terrified, but he said, "Take me out of this place!" In a moment, he was standing outside in the sunshine. He ran all the way home and told his mother everything.
The next day, there was no food in the house. "I will sell this old lamp," said Aladdin's mother. "But it is so dirty. Let me clean it first, so we can get a better price." She began to rub it with a cloth. Suddenly, an even bigger genie appeared, filling the whole room. "I am the slave of the lamp," it said. "What do you wish?"
Aladdin's mother fainted. But Aladdin took the lamp and said, "We are hungry. Bring us something to eat." The genie disappeared, and returned with twelve silver dishes full of delicious food. Now Aladdin understood why the magician wanted the lamp so badly.
From that day, Aladdin and his mother lived well. Aladdin learned about the world. He met merchants and jewelers, and he learned that the "glass" stones from the garden were jewels of great value. He became wiser and more polite.
One day, Aladdin saw the Sultan's daughter, Princess Badr al-Budur, on her way to the baths. She was so beautiful that he fell in love at once. "I will marry her," he told his mother. His mother laughed, but she agreed to visit the Sultan. She carried a bowl of the jewels from the garden. When the Sultan saw them, his eyes grew wide. He had never seen such jewels in his own treasury.
The Sultan's vizier was jealous. He wanted the princess to marry his own son. "Ask the boy for more," he whispered to the Sultan. So the Sultan said, "Your son may marry my daughter, if he sends me forty gold bowls full of jewels, carried by forty servants dressed in fine clothes."
With the help of the genie, Aladdin sent all of this and more. The Sultan agreed to the marriage at once. Then, in a single night, the genie built a palace for Aladdin and the princess. It was made of marble and gold, and its windows were decorated with diamonds. When the Sultan looked out in the morning, he could hardly believe his eyes. Aladdin and the princess were married, and they lived happily. Aladdin was generous to the poor, and the people loved him.
But far away in Africa, the magician used his magic arts and learned that Aladdin was alive and rich. He was furious. He hurried back to China. He bought a basket of shiny new copper lamps and walked past Aladdin's palace, calling, "New lamps for old! Who will trade old lamps for new ones?"
Aladdin was away hunting. The princess did not know the secret of the old lamp. When she heard the strange call, she laughed and sent a servant out with the dirty old lamp from Aladdin's room. The magician took it, and his heart jumped with joy. That night, he rubbed the lamp and ordered the genie to carry the palace, with the princess inside, all the way to Africa.
When the Sultan woke up, the palace was gone, and so was his daughter. He was so angry that he ordered Aladdin to be arrested. "Find my daughter in forty days," he said, "or you will lose your head."
Aladdin left the city in despair. He did not know what to do. Then, sitting by a river, he rubbed his hands together and touched the ring. The slave of the ring appeared. "I cannot bring back the palace," it said. "Only the slave of the lamp can do that." "Then take me to it," said Aladdin, and in a moment he was in Africa, under the window of the princess.
The princess was overjoyed to see him. Together, they made a plan. That evening, she was kind to the magician for the first time and invited him to dinner. She put a sleeping powder into his cup of wine. The magician drank it and fell into a deep sleep. Aladdin came in and took the lamp from the magician's robe. He rubbed it, and the genie carried the palace back to China.
The Sultan was so happy to see his daughter that he forgave Aladdin completely. As for the magician, he never troubled them again. In time, Aladdin became the Sultan himself, and he ruled kindly and wisely for many years, with the princess at his side.
