It is late at night, and you suddenly remember that you need a new pair of running shoes. You pick up your phone, choose a pair, and tap a button. The next day, a box arrives at your door. Online shopping has made buying things easier than ever. But behind that single tap, many people, trucks, and boxes are working to bring the shoes to you, and the true cost of this convenience has become a hot topic in Japan.
Online shopping has grown quickly over the past twenty years. In Japan, the number of parcels delivered by home delivery services rose from about 3.2 billion in the 2010 fiscal year to about 5 billion in the 2023 fiscal year. That is a big jump. It means that each person in Japan received about 40 parcels a year on average. The COVID-19 pandemic sped up this trend, as many people avoided crowded stores and began buying food, clothes, and daily goods online.
The advantages are clear. Online stores are open 24 hours a day, so people can shop whenever they like. They can compare prices from many sellers in a few minutes and read reviews from other customers. For people who live far from large stores, for older people who find it hard to carry heavy bags, and for parents with small children, online shopping can be a great help. Small businesses in the countryside can also sell their products to customers all over the country.
However, this convenience depends on the hard work of delivery drivers, and there are not enough of them. Many drivers work long hours, and the job is physically demanding. In April 2024, new rules took effect in Japan that limited the overtime hours of truck drivers to 960 hours a year. The rules were meant to protect drivers' health, but they also meant that the same number of drivers could carry fewer goods. People began calling this the "2024 problem" of logistics.
One of the biggest wastes in home delivery is redelivery. When nobody is at home, the driver must take the package back and try again later. In 2024, about one in ten parcels in Japan had to be delivered more than once. This means extra work for drivers, more fuel, and more carbon dioxide from trucks.
Companies, the government, and customers have been trying to solve this problem. Many people now choose to have packages left at their door, or pick them up from lockers at train stations and convenience stores. Some services let customers choose a later delivery date when they are not in a hurry, so that companies can plan their routes more efficiently. In Japan, there has even been a debate about whether online stores should stop using the words "free delivery." Some experts say that these words make people forget that someone is still paying for the work.
Returns are another hidden cost. Because customers cannot touch or try on products before buying them, they often return items that do not fit or look different from the pictures. Some shoppers even order the same clothes in several sizes and send back the ones they do not want. Each return means more transport, more packaging, and more work. In some cases, returned items cannot easily be sold again, and they may be thrown away.
Online shopping can also change the way we spend money. With saved card details and one-tap buttons, buying something takes only a few seconds, and there is little time to ask, "Do I really need this?" Sales that end at midnight and messages such as "Only two left!" can push people to buy quickly. Some shoppers later find boxes of things that they hardly use.
Packaging is also a problem. A small item may arrive in a large cardboard box filled with plastic air bags or paper. Although cardboard can be recycled, producing and transporting all of these boxes uses energy and resources. Some companies have started to use smaller packages or simple paper envelopes, and some let customers choose to receive several items together in one box.
Is online shopping always worse for the environment than going to a store? Not necessarily. One delivery truck that visits many homes on a well-planned route may use less fuel than dozens of shoppers who each drive their own cars to a shopping mall. However, this advantage can disappear when packages are delivered one by one at high speed, when drivers must come back again and again, or when many items are returned. In other words, how we shop online matters as much as whether we shop online.
Online shopping also affects towns. When more people buy online, local stores may lose customers, and shopping streets can become quiet. On the other hand, some local shops have used online stores to reach new customers far away, and some people say that the two kinds of shopping can support each other.
New technology may help. Companies are testing delivery robots that travel along sidewalks, and drones that carry packages to mountain areas and islands. Self-driving trucks may one day carry goods on expressways at night. But these technologies are still being developed, and for now, most packages are still carried by human hands.
As customers, we can also make a difference. We can choose a delivery time when we will be at home, use lockers, avoid ordering things that we are likely to return, and combine several orders into one. Small actions like these, repeated by millions of people, can reduce the burden on drivers and on the environment.
Online shopping is not going away, and it has improved many people's lives. The question is how we can enjoy its benefits while sharing its costs fairly. Remembering that every package is carried by a real person may be the first step.
What do you think? Some people say that online shopping is good for society, because it saves time and helps people who cannot easily go to stores. Others say that we should use it more carefully, because it puts heavy pressure on delivery workers, creates waste, and hurts local shops.
