March third is Hinamatsuri, the Doll Festival. It is a day for girls in Japan.
Families put out special dolls. The dolls sit on red steps. Some sets have seven steps!
At the top, there are two dolls, the emperor and the empress. Under them, there are ladies, music players, and more. They all wear beautiful old clothes.
Families eat pink, white, and green rice cakes. They eat colorful sushi, too. They wish, "Grow up happy and well!"
After the festival, families put the dolls away soon. Why? There is an old saying. Put the dolls away late, and the girl will marry late!
Many people do not really believe it. But some families still say, "Quick, quick! Put the dolls away!"
Some families use the same dolls for many, many years. A girl can have her grandmother's dolls. Some dolls are one hundred years old!
