寒い冬の夜です。さあ、どうぞ上がってください！ うちのこたつにお入りください。
A kotatsu is a low table. It has a heater under it. A big, soft blanket goes over the table.
こたつは、低いテーブルです。テーブルの下にヒーターがついています。そして、大きくてふかふかの布団を、テーブルにかけます。
Put your legs under the blanket. Oh, it is so warm!
布団の中に足を入れてみてください。ああ、なんて温かいんでしょう！
The family sits around the kotatsu. They eat mikan, small oranges. They watch TV. They talk and laugh.
家族はこたつを囲んで座ります。小さなオレンジ色の果物、みかんを食べます。テレビを見たり、おしゃべりをして笑ったりします。
But be careful! When you go in, you cannot come out. Mom says, "Can you get some tea?" Dad says, "You go!" Mom says, "No, you go!" Nobody wants to get up.
でも、気をつけてください！ 一度入ると、もう出られなくなるのです。お母さんが「お茶を持ってきてくれる？」と言います。お父さんは「きみが行ってよ！」と言い、お母さんは「いやいや、あなたが行って！」と返します。だれも立ち上がりたくないのです。
Some people stay there all night. They fall asleep at the kotatsu!
一晩じゅう、こたつに入ったままの人もいます。そのまま、こたつで眠ってしまうのです！
And who loves the kotatsu most? Look under the blanket. Yes, it is the cat! It is sleeping in the warm dark.
では、いちばんこたつが好きなのはだれでしょう？ 布団の中をのぞいてみてください。そう、ネコです！ 温かい暗がりの中で、すやすや眠っています。
